"Project Runway” Designers Face Invigorating Challenge from HP on Lifetime Television’s Hit Series

HP (NYSE:HPQ) spotlighted the integration of technology and fashion with a special design challenge from HP and Intel that aired last Thursday on Lifetime Television’s hit show "Project Runway.”

Contestants were challenged to create original fabric patterns on HP TouchSmart PCs with Intel processors, drawing from personal stories and family photographs for inspiration. The one-of-a-kind fabrics were then constructed into stunning runway looks.

The HP and Project Runway "Pattern Making” challenge has become a signature episode for the long-running series.

"The divide between fashion and technology is getting narrower by the day,” said Nina Garcia, fashion director at Marie Claire and judge for "Project Runway.” "Major designers and fashion houses are tapping into the online and digital worlds, whether to create prints and patterns or promote their collections.”

The challenge from HP and Intel was the first time designers were given the opportunity to use technology to create their own patterns from scratch.

HP TouchSmart PCs provide an abundance of creative options and a liberating interface for users to unleash their creativity in an intuitive way. With a paintbrush or finger to the "digital canvas,” designers can incorporate their personal styles into the material they use for their final garments.

"With the excitement and industry impact generated by last season’s HP and Intel challenge, our touch technology was brought back to help designers take their creativity to an even higher level,” said Tracey Trachta, executive director, Global Marketing, Personal Systems Group, HP. "We saw designers such as Emilio Sosa go on to create a brand based on this challenge, and it’s equally inspiring to see technology and our joint efforts with Intel spark ingenuity among season eight’s designers.”

HP has been a forerunner in the fashion-meets-technology space – first with its collaboration with designer Vivienne Tam on the HP Mini Vivienne Tam "digital clutch” notebook PC and then in relationships with other fashion icons – "Project Runway” and "Sex and the City 2.”

Technology on the show

The "Project Runway” designers are using the latest HP TouchSmart PCs and HP TouchSmart tm2 notebook PCs, both powered with Intel® Core™ i5 processors, to expand their creativity throughout the season. HP TouchSmart PCs feature a lustrous design that integrates a striking high-definition widescreen display with a multitouch-enabled screen. Users can pinch, rotate, flip or drag a finger across the screen of the PC to create distinctive designs in a natural, intuitive way.

The winning designer of season eight will receive a $50,000 prize package from HP and Intel to create, design and run his or her own business.
