Local Young Scientists Eligible for $100,000 Grand Prize Semifinalists Named Today in the Intel Science Talent Search

Intel Corporation: WHEN:   - Semifinalist announcement: Jan. 16 at 1 p.m. EST (for students in Eastern, Central and Mountain time zones) and 4 p.m. EST (for students in Pacific time zone) - Finalist announcement: Jan. 30 at 1 p.m. EST (for students in Eastern, Central and Mountain time zones) and 4 p.m. EST (for students in Pacific time zone) - Winner announcement: March 11 at 10 p.m. EST   WHERE: 194 high schools from 38 states. Semifinalist and finalist names will be posted on this site: www.societyforscience.org/sts/index.asp and semifinalist high schools are listed below.   WHAT: 300 high school seniors today will be named semifinalists of the Intel Science Talent Search (Intel STS) 2008, chosen from 1,602 entrants from 45 states and 2 territories, representing 504 high schools.     Intel STS, America's oldest and most prestigious science competition, is often called the "junior Nobel Prize." Each of the 300 semifinalists receives $1,000 with an additional $1,000 going to their schools, resulting in $600,000 in total awards. Society for Science & the Public (formerly Science Service), a nonprofit organization dedicated to the public engagement in scientific research and education, owns and has administered the STS since its inception in 1942.   On Jan. 30, 40 finalists will be named who will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., in March to compete for more than $500,000.     INTERVIEWS: Contact Kara Gaffney to learn more about your local semifinalist and their project, coordinate an interview or request a follow-up call if your local student is announced as a finalist on Jan. 30.
