Leading Australian University Chooses Juniper Networks Solution to Sec
Business Editors/High-Tech Editors
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 25, 2005--Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq:JNPR) today announced that Queensland University of Technology (QUT), one of Australia's leading universities, will utilize a Juniper Networks solution to implement a new Internet accounting and border firewall system to drive down its Internet infrastructure costs, eliminate bottlenecks and improve download speeds. The key objectives of the implementation are to improve control over Internet access, increase security and reduce Internet costs.
Peter Newman, Project Manager, Internet Access Infrastructure Review, Information Technology Services, QUT, commented, "Following a rigorous evaluation process, it was clear that the Juniper Networks solution was the best fit for the University. A university is a very demanding environment, in terms of network usage and security threats. As the provider of network resources to a myriad of departments and individuals in our community, we need to maintain not just quality of service, but also accurate auditing mechanisms for the users."
He added, "We found the Juniper Networks solution to be highly available, robust and flexible. It was proven to be more scalable in our operating environment, with a more complete feature set for the university's needs. The ability for this Juniper-based system to grow and cater for our high bandwidth research applications will enable QUT to achieve a competitive advantage in the research environment."
QUT will install stateful Firewall and IP-based accounting from Juniper Networks to replace the existing server-embedded system the University has been using for the past five years. The new system will facilitate access for all of QUT's 5,000 staff and 40,000 students, with approximately 6,000 to 8,000 users accessing the Internet at any one time during peak periods.
The new solution will use the Juniper Networks ISG-2000 integrated firewall and Virtual Private Network (VPN) systems, E-series edge routing platforms, and SDX-300 Service Deployment System. The combined solution will deliver best-in class security combined with highly granular accounting and access control at Gigabit-per-second throughput. The installed solution is designed to handle 60,000 registered users, of which 8,000 are expected to be connected simultaneously at peak times. The solution can be scaled to almost any required number of simultaneous connections.
"Following implementation we expect to reduce the cost of Internet traffic to QUT by at least 10 percent and speed downloads by increasing the bandwidth available to clients," said Newman. "We are also endeavouring to simplify the system, particularly in the configuration required by client desktops."
Juniper Networks value-added reseller Lanlink (an Integ Company) will provide integration, deployment services and ongoing support to QUT.
"Juniper is an ideal solution for universities and other organizations that require rapid and secure access to web information and need to drive down infrastructure total cost of ownership while enabling next-generation services," said Ken Louis, General Manager, Lanlink. "We look forward to continuing our close working relationship with QUT to see them reap the significant security, cost and performance benefits from this implementation."
"Today's enterprises face the competing goals of needing to drive new and more demanding applications -- with ever-increasing traffic demands through their network -- while lowering their infrastructure and operating costs, and at the same time protecting themselves from network-based threats," said Shaun Page, vice president of Australia and New Zealand for Juniper Networks. "Juniper's solutions are helping organizations like QUT to address these challenges with affordable, reliable and flexible solutions that simplify traffic management, improve content delivery and lower total cost of ownership."
