Cruise Ships To Help After Irma
(RTTNews) - Cruise line operators are sending their massive ships to aid in relief efforts in the Caribbean islands following the widespread devastation due to Hurricane Irma.
Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCL) said on Sunday that it was closely monitoring the hurricane's path and sending two ships to the Caribbean islands impacted by the massive storm.
In coordination with the U.S. and local governments, the company has dispatched ships to St. Thomas and St. Maarten. It also stood ready to assist Key West, Tampa and other locations.
Royal Caribbean said that one of its ships, Adventure of the Seas, will make a humanitarian stop in St. Maarten on Sunday. The ship has a passenger capacity of 3,800.
Another ship, Majesty of the Seas, will make humanitarian calls in St. Thomas and St. Maarten to provide supplies and also assist in transporting evacuees in St. Maarten to safety. The ship has a passenger capacity of 2,800.
St. Maarten, the Dutch side of the dividend island of St. Martin, is located east of Puerto Rico. The Netherlands government has said that at least four people were killed and 70 percent of the houses on the island were damaged by Hurricane Irma.
St. Thomas, part of the U.S. Virgin Islands, has also suffered extensive damage from the hurricane.
"Additionally, we have Empress of the Seas and Enchantment of the Seas ready to assist Key West and Tampa once the impact of the storm is known," Royal Caribbean stated.
Another cruise line operator, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. (NCLH), said that one of its ships, Norwegian Escape, was sailing at full capacity with approximately 4,000 displaced guests from two ships that were unable to secure flights back home.
The cruise line added that it has deployed its Norwegian Sky ship, which has a passenger capacity of 2,004, to St. Thomas to deliver much needed supplies and also assist in a humanitarian effort being organized by the government.
Both the companies have canceled some cruises in order to utilize their ships for humanitarian efforts in the Caribbean islands.
