Boston Medical Standardizes Information Technology on Dell to Help Enhance Patient Care
Boston Medical Center has standardized on Dell (NASDAQ:DELL) technology –
in patient rooms, at nurses’ stations and
labs, in the data center and administrative offices –
to enhance its ability to provide quality medical care to every patient.
As the area’s largest level-one trauma center,
Boston Medical Center relies on high availability of technology
applications to manage patient care and hospital operations. The
hospital is running its critical applications, including in-patient care
records, more than 10,000 Internet-enabled medical devices, e-mail
communications and business functions on Dell PowerEdge™
servers. Consolidating on Dell has made purchasing, procurement and
management of technology easier, while giving Boston Medical Center the
technology infrastructure it needs to enhance care today and into the
future.
With the assistance of the Dell Services organization, the medical
center has also deployed virtualization software on Dell servers,
enabling the reduction of testing, development and training servers from
50 to five. Virtualization allows multiple applications and operating
systems to run independently on a single server. For Boston Medical
Center, this transition helps save critical installation and maintenance
time for an organization that operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
"While cost savings are important, ultimately
nothing matters to Boston Medical more than the quality of patient care,”
said Brad Blake, the medical center’s director
of infrastructure and engineering. "Because of
the reliability and ease of use of our Dell infrastructure –
as well as the availability it lends to our applications –
the IT staff doesn’t have to worry about our
medical teams losing access to critical systems. That enables them to
focus on our goal of treating every patient that comes through our doors
with the best care we have to offer.”
Wireless desktops and notebooks provide nurses, physicians and hospital
staff access to patient care and administration applications, allowing
the entry of real-time patient data. For quick deployment, each computer
comes with the medical center’s applications
already installed. Dell Services also manages the set up of each
computer so the IT staff can focus on broader goals and strategy.
Boston Medical Center’s infrastructure also
includes Dell projectors and printers, which have proven to be easy for
the IT department to deploy and simple for the hospital staff to use.
"By delivering innovation through Dell
technology and services, Boston Medical will have a pervasive,
highly-manageable IT infrastructure that enables their staff to truly
focus on quality patient care,” said James
Coffin, vice president and general manager of Dell’s
Health Care segment. "Dell is committed to
helping organizations like Boston Medical by delivering solutions that
enhance the best possible clinical outcomes.” About Dell
