Unisys to Implement Virginia's New Statewide Voter Registration System; New contract valued at $6.1 million

    Business Editors/High-Tech Editors

BLUE BELL, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 28, 2005--Unisys Corporation (NYSE:UIS) today announced that it has signed a contract with the Virginia Information Technologies Agency (VITA) on behalf of the State Board of Elections to implement the new Virginia Election and Registration Information System (VERIS). The initial term of the contract consists of a system implementation period from January to December 2005 and one year of support. The value of the initial term is $6.1 million. There are also five one-year options for ongoing support. Should all contract options be exercised, the total contract value will be approximately $8 million.
To achieve the Federal Help America Vote Act of 2002 (HAVA) compliance, VERIS will replace Virginia's more than 25-year-old, legacy Virginia Voter Registration System. Under HAVA, each state is required to establish and maintain a single, central, uniform, official and interactive computerized statewide voter registration database that is defined, maintained and administered at the state level.
Unisys is the prime contractor and will direct the implementation of the FirstTuesday(TM) application, a new software package developed by Quest Information Systems, Inc., based upon the Microsoft .NET platform. Unisys is also working with Aradyme Corporation for the database conversion.
Unisys will train hundreds of Virginia State Board of Elections staff and local registrars' end users statewide, as well as provide support for the application that will be installed at the Virginia Information Technologies Agency (VITA) data center.
"Unisys was the successful vendor because they bring a new and innovative state-of-the-art technology that will permit the Virginia State Board of Elections to develop and implement a voter registration system that will serve as a national model," said Lynda Sharp Anderson, deputy secretary, Virginia State Board of Elections.
"We look forward to implementing Virginia's new voter registration system to help improve the registration and election process for the citizens of Virginia. VERIS will provide new capabilities to state and local registrars' staffs throughout the Commonwealth, including a mapping system that enables redistricting modeling and online, 'always on,' interactive training," said Mark Danis, vice president and managing partner, Unisys North America Public Sector.
The Unisys solution is designed to help state legislatures redraw district boundaries in an effort to maximize voter access to polling places. Redistricting modeling helps the state test and evaluate variables to determine outcomes if voting boundaries are moved.
