SouthernLINC Wireless Selects 2007 Southern Heroes

SouthernLINC Wireless®, a Southern Company (NYSE: SO), today announced the three exemplary individuals it will honor as Southern Heroes. Founded in 2004, the company’s Southern Heroes program annually recognizes individuals in the Southeast who make a daily, concerted effort to improve their communities. "Our Southern Heroes program features ordinary people making extraordinary differences in the lives of others, and we’re honored to be able to publicly recognize these three outstanding citizens,” said Julie Pigott, vice president of marketing and customer support for SouthernLINC Wireless. "It was a pleasure to read each of the nominations we received this year. There were so many inspirational stories of people doing great things for their communities here in the Southeast; it was a challenge to select only three individuals.” A panel of judges reviewed the nominations and selected three outstanding individuals to spotlight as the 2007 Southern Heroes. They are: Marcus Chambers (Shalimar, Fla.); nominated by Jacque Whittle and her fifth grade class. Marcus is in his second year as principal at Longwood Elementary School. In his short time there, he has made several renovations to the school including new desks and chairs, the addition of a computer lab and an after school tutoring program. The students nominated Principal Chambers because he constantly provides positive reinforcement and reminds them that they can achieve anything if they put their minds to it. Elizabeth Harvill (Lyons, Ga.); nominated by friend Patricia Dixon. As the executive director of the Vidalia Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, Elizabeth volunteers her marketing and fundraising talents with the United Way, Toombs County Centennial Committee, Open Doors for the Handicapped, Refuge for Domestic Violence, and her local church. Most recently Elizabeth founded a support group for couples who have had miscarriages; this is the first group of its kind in the area. Patricia Jones (Abbeville, Ala.); nominated by co-worker Shelly Linderman. Patricia is the founder and president of the Southeast VOCAL (victims of crime and leniency) chapter. After a personal tragedy of her own, Patricia decided to make a difference in her community. She supports and advocates on behalf of local victims and their families by going to court with families and offering support a when tragedy happens. Patricia also travels throughout the state educating law enforcement about VOCAL, victims’ rights and compensation, and parole hearings. In addition to her role at VOCAL, Patricia always lends a helping hand to friends and family in her community. SouthernLINC Wireless will recognize the three Southern Heroes by sponsoring a celebration and recognition ceremony in their hometowns this fall. The company will further the heroes’ efforts by contributing $1,000 to the nonprofit organization or charity of each hero’s choice.
