    HAUPPAUGE, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 10, 2005--

Introduces Smallest Hi-Speed USB PHY to Utilize 8-bit UTMI Interface
to Deliver Performance, Size and Cost Benefits for Designers of
    Portable Applications

SMSC (Nasdaq:SMSC), a leading semiconductor company delivering innovative system solutions spanning analog, digital and mixed-signal technologies, today introduced its USB3280 mini UTMI stand-alone device transceiver, which has passed Hi-Speed USB device compliance testing with the USB-IF. SMSC offers the industry's broadest family of Hi-Speed USB stand-alone physical layer transceivers (PHYs), covering the range of SIE/PHY interface standards.
SMSC's USB3280 mini UTMI stand-alone PHY supports the 8-bit bi-directional UTMI SIE/PHY interface, and provides a reduction of 20 pins and a footprint reduction of more than 40% compared to existing solutions. As a result, discrete USB transceiver implementations are optimized to support device functionality.
"With the introduction of the USB3280 mini UTMI device PHY, SMSC has further expanded its family of industry leading Hi-Speed USB PHYs," said Steve Nelson, Vice President of Marketing - Connectivity Solutions at SMSC. "Customers are asking for smaller footprint stand-alone PHYs for their portable consumer electronics products with the flexibility of supporting a variety of physical layer interface standards. As the go-to PHY solutions provider, we continue to build this family of products to meet our customer's requirements today as well as providing a migration path for future requirements."
"SMSC is also adding support for the 8-bit bi-directional UTMI PHY interface through the USB3280, which can be utilized today in products such as MP3 players, PDAs, cell phones and digital still cameras. In combination with other recently introduced PHYs, SMSC is supporting ASIC and SoC designers who require the performance and time-to-market advantages of a proven stand-alone solution. Additionally, with the variety of SIE/PHY interfaces supported, SMSC can meet customer's long-term requirements as they migrate from the 16-bit UTMI interface, to 8-bit UTMI, to ULPI and beyond."

    Pricing & Availability:

The USB3280 is available in a 6mm x 6mm x 0.9mm 36-pin QFN package. Qualification samples and production quantities of the SMSC USB3280 PHY are available today. Pricing is $2.00 per unit (U.S. list price) in 10K quantities.
