NEC Fingerprint Technology Helps Indiana Communities Improve Safety for Citizens; South Bend, Fort Wayne Police Reaping Benefits of Regional Fingerprint Identification System
Since deploying NEC AFIS technology in 2002 and 2004,respectively, Fort Wayne and South Bend have seen a 340% increase intotal correct case identifications. Fort Wayne's Allen County Jail sawa 350% increase in identifying incarcerated subjects that had providedfalse identity information -- from 17 to 59 individuals in the firstyear alone -- that averaged over one a week. In the last three monthsalone, South Bend was able to identify 82 people who provided falsenames when they were arrested, and properly identify 28 people whowere wanted on warrants.
In turn, because both cities' fingerprint databases are linkedwith that of the Indiana State Police, both communities have access tothe state's 1.2 million tenprint and 9 thousand latent fingerprintrecords and can share their local records on a larger scale. Theintegration of the three systems has resulted in significant timesavings to the state's criminal, prosecutorial and court systems.
"Our long history with NEC and its fingerprint technology has paidhuge dividends in improved public safety, reduced bureaucracy, andimmense cost savings," said David Young, laboratory supervisor andAFIS manager, Fort Wayne Police Department.
"By integrating our AFIS systems and linking them to the statesystem, we benefit both regionally and statewide in our efforts tofight crime," said Charles Eakins, Crime Lab director, South BendPolice Department. "Given its superior fingerprint technology and itsunderstanding of law enforcement, NEC Solutions America was a naturalfit for South Bend."
"NEC is immensely proud of its contribution to law enforcement inthe South Bend and Fort Wayne areas," said Barry Fisher, vicepresident, AFIS Division of NEC Solutions America. "Their results andsatisfaction validate the customer and industry praise NEC hasreceived for the past two decades, and we look forward to servingthese cities for many years to come."
Both Fort Wayne and South Bend use the NEC AFIS21-DS(TM) AFISdesktop solution. Using the same powerful features as its largerparent system, AFIS21(TM), the scalable and flexible AFIS21-DSempowers small agencies to control their own AFIS system locally.Because AFIS21-DS is based on a scalable architecture, it can beconfigured with as few as two PCs or extended to multiple services ina parallel processing environment. As workload requirements grow, theAFIS21-DS can be configured to expand, allowing for greater return oninvestment and increased productivity.
