Monotype Imaging Debuts Public Beta of SpectraWorks GUI Solution with Enhanced Text Support

Monotype Imaging Holdings Inc. (Nasdaq: TYPE), a leading global provider of text imaging solutions, has launched the public beta of SpectraWorks version 2.4, a hardware- and OS-independent suite of technologies for developing embedded graphical user interfaces quickly and inexpensively. The latest version will mark the first product for consumer electronics device manufacturers that integrates the company’s font technologies with SpectraWorks software from Planetweb, Inc., a worldwide provider of GUI software tools acquired by Monotype Imaging in December, 2009.

SpectraWorks 2.4 combines capabilities from the iType® font engine and WorldType® Layout Engine, Monotype Imaging’s text rendering and layout solutions that feature proprietary innovations for quickly displaying high-quality, multilingual text. In addition, SpectraWorks 2.4 includes new 2.5-dimensional perspective transformation capabilities that allow for the rotation of widget groupings, enabling the appearance of 3D views of the widgets at various angles.

"With this newest version, SpectraWorks will offer a deep set of text capabilities, in addition to new 3D-style perspective transformation features, which will broaden opportunity for OEMs to develop distinctive graphical user interfaces,” said John Seguin, executive vice president of Monotype Imaging. "Customers will have finer control over differentiating their offerings and reducing time to market, thanks to the ability to address text and language requirements as part of the GUI design and development process from Day 1.”

Licensed to OEMs, developers and designers, SpectraWorks enables the design of highly interactive GUIs and applications for CE devices such as digital cameras, set-top boxes, high-definition DVD players and consumer appliances. SpectraWorks comprises three products: the SpectraBuilder design tool for constructing and customizing GUIs through a library of building block components; the SpectraCore embedded systems library that runs on target devices and serves as the GUI rendering engine; and the SpectraApps library of C-code applications that can be customized by OEMs to rapidly build unique products.

SpectraWorks 2.4 supports several capabilities featured in the iType font engine, Monotype Imaging’s font rendering subsystem for enabling the clear display of text in virtually any language. In addition to the iType rasterizer, SpectraWorks 2.4 supports Edge Technology, the company’s proprietary solution for displaying superior quality, typographically rich East Asian text in a small memory footprint. SpectraWorks 2.4 supports several font formats, including TrueType® fonts, Monotype Imaging’s CATT (Compact Asian for TrueType Technology) fonts, Edge fonts, stroke fonts, font subsets, embedded bitmaps, custom fonts and linked fonts. Also new in SpectraWorks 2.4 is the support of iType text effects, including selectable bold weight, selectable italic angle, outline width and outline opacity control, as well as "glow” – a visual effect that results from specifying a dark outline that grows lighter as the eye moves away from the text.

SpectraWorks 2.4 also supports Monotype Imaging’s WorldType Shaper, a character shaping technology from WorldType Layout Engine, Monotype Imaging’s multilingual text layout solution. WorldType Shaper facilitates the ability to clearly display characters from complex scripts such as Arabic, Indic and Hebrew – writing systems that contain characters that can change shape, depending on the order of certain characters entered by the user. WorldType Shaper also enables characters from complex scripts to display in the proper direction in which the characters are expected to appear.
