LA's Canadian Expat Community Honors a Heroic Tradition

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Angelenos can follow in the footsteps of one of Canada's best-loved heroes and join a worldwide initiative to find a cure for cancer on Saturday, September 14, 2013.

Los Angeles is one of an estimated 9000 locations where the annual Terry Fox Run will honor the memory of the courageous young Canadian amputee who endeavored on a cross-country run to raise money for cancer research. Thirty-three years after Terry Fox was forced by a return of his cancer to end his run, thousands will again rally to continue the now-legendary Marathon of Hope.

In Los Angeles, expat organization, Canadians Abroad, hosts the Terry Fox Run LA, which returns for the 3rd year to Elysian Fields where the 5K walk/run is followed by a barbeque and get-together.

In addition to fun and fundraising, the annual Canadians Abroad-coordinated event is also a great opportunity for Canadian-spotting. A community that is typically integrated into the LA fabric, their national colors and sentiments emerge infrequently. But the Terry Fox Run is compelling for Canadians many of whom watched Terry Fox's dramatic run on television in 1980, or who ran in annual Terry Fox Runs at school, in their communities and around the world. Celebrities, athletes, executives, stay-at-home moms, students... all united in a distinctly Canadian tradition that celebrates hope and courage and works toward the goal of finding a cure for cancer.
