Kindle E-readers Of Up To 5th Generation Need Critical Software Update

(RTTNews) - Kindle e-readers made prior to 2012 need a critical software update before March 22, Amazon notified. Failing an update would make the device useless or may cause loosing your books. Moreover, there will be connectivity restrictions to access Cloud, Kindle store and Kindle services.

Amazon noted that the device owners may have to download a patch manually if they fail to do the update or they have to install it, using a computer.

The company said the first generation Kindle made in 2007 has 1.2.1 version of the software. The second generation of 2009 and Kindle DX second generation have 2.5.8 version. The third generation of 2010 has 3.4.2 or higher version. Fourth generation has 5.3.7.3 version software, and fifth generation 5.6.1.1. or higher versions.

The first and second generation device can be updated via wireless, while the third, fourth, and fifth generation can be updated using a Wi-Fi connection. The sixth generation onward need no update.

For doing an update using a Wi-Fi, one needs to select Menu on home screen and choose Sync and check for items. Then, you need to plug the Kindle and leave it plugged in and connected to a Wi-Fi network overnight. The device will download the software and install automatically.
