IDG’s Computerworld Names FalconStor Customer Earth Rangers as One of the Top Green-IT Organizations

FalconStor Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: FALC), the provider of TOTALLY Open™ data protection solutions, today announced that its customer, Earth Rangers, was selected by IDG’s Computerworld, the leading IT media brand dedicated to providing peer perspective, IT leadership and business results, as one of the top Green-IT Organizations for 2010. This honor is part of the IT media outlet’s annual Top Green-IT Organizations feature, which was published in the October 25 issue of Computerworld and online at Computerworld.com.

Earth Rangers is an innovative nonprofit organization dedicated to educating children about critical environmental issues. Within its data center, Earth Rangers deployed a virtualized infrastructure using FalconStor® Continuous Data Protector (CDP) as the data protection component. Housed in a small 100-square-foot space, the virtual server infrastructure eliminates 90 percent of the hardware a conventional server deployment requires and saves more than 111,000 kilowatt hours a year or the equivalent of more than 26 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

Additionally, a virtual private network (VPN) allows more than half of Earth Rangers’ staff to work from home, reducing pollution caused by driving to work every day. It is estimated that Earth Rangers’ VPN capabilities can help eliminate more than 23 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year. By creating a virtualized environment on energy-efficient blades, Earth Rangers has saved nearly 85 percent of the energy costs compared with a non-virtualized environment.

"Earth Rangers is a living example of how organizations can improve data protection processes, achieve greater operational efficiency and reduce costs – all while running a green data center,” said Fadi Albatal, vice president of marketing at FalconStor. "Green IT initiatives should not be cost-prohibitive or compromise efficiency; in fact, they can dramatically improve business operations. We are pleased to see the IT community recognize Earth Rangers for its energy efficiency, and we are proud of FalconStor’s contribution to its environmentally responsible backup and disaster recovery practices.”

For the third year in a row, Computerworld set out to identify organizations that are implementing smart, efficient strategies to achieve "green IT.” Organizations were invited to complete a comprehensive questionnaire online from May to July. Ninety-five organizations participated. Computerworld then contacted representatives at the participating organizations to verify that the information provided on their organization’s survey was truthful and accurate. Only those organizations that filed verification letters were considered. Computerworld then applied a set of criteria, developed with the help of green-IT industry experts, to identify the organizations that are working to reduce energy consumption in IT equipment and are using technology to conserve energy and lower carbon emissions. Based on the weighting scheme developed, the top 12 Green-IT Users and top 12 Green-IT Vendors lists were chosen. "Many of the organizations recognized in our third annual Top Green-IT issue have already plucked ‘low-hanging fruit,’ such as reducing travel with teleconferencing or buying Energy Star-rated IT equipment,” said Scot Finnie, editor in chief, Computerworld. "These top organizations are truly stretching now, exploring innovative new ways to apply technology to reduce energy consumption. They know that achieving green-IT isn’t a one-time effort; they’re in it for the long haul.”
