HP Awards More than $7 Million in Education Grants to 170 Schools Across the United States; HP Technology for Teaching Grant Promotes Student Interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math

Grant recipients include 130 kindergarten through 12th gradepublic schools and 40 two- and four-year colleges and universities.During the 2006-07 academic year, projects through this program willimpact nearly 45,000 students.

The program is designed to improve student achievement through theinnovative uses of technology in the classroom while encouragingstudent interest in careers in science, technology, engineering andmath.

From 2004-2006, HP has contributed a total of $36 million inTechnology for Teaching grants to more than 650 schools worldwide.Over the last 20 years, HP has contributed more than $1 billion incash and equipment to schools, universities, community organizationsand other nonprofit organizations around the world.

"HP empowers students and teachers with technology and trainingbecause we know it contributes to improved student achievement," saidBess Stephens, vice president, Philanthropy and Education, HP.

Since the inception of the HP Technology for Teaching initiative,grant recipients have reported a positive influence on teaching andstudent learning as a result of the program.

"The HP Technology for Teaching grant has provided our teacherswith equipment and training to impact our students' success," saidJeff Hunt, principal at Surprise Lake Middle School in Milton, Wash.,a 2004-2005 grant recipient. "Our results after just one year ofapplying the grant include increased student attendance, teachersobserving students working harder and producing more detailed work,and student scores in math have improved."

K-12 grants

HP is awarding $4.5 million in cash and equipment to teams of fiveteachers at 130 K-12 public schools in the United States. Preferencewas given to schools serving low-income students and projectsincluding a math or science component.

The award package, valued at more than $35,000 for each team, willinclude five HP Tablet PCs, five HP multimedia projectors, five HPdigital cameras, five HP PSC all-in-one printer/scanner/copiers,software and accessories, and a cash stipend for each teacher.

Teachers also will participate in a professional developmentprogram led by HP's partner, the International Society for Technologyin Education, during which they will receive mentoring and customizedlearning opportunities and will participate in an online learningcommunity for teachers to share best practices.

One example of a grant-winning initiative is at P.S. 8M, the LuisBelliard School in New York City, where fourth and fifth gradestudents will achieve city and state science standards through theirstudy of the New York City environment, including its ecology andgeology, and the effects of pollution. They will use the HP-donatedtechnology and software to collect and analyze data, and create adigital documentary detailing their investigation and findings.

Higher education grants

HP is awarding 40 two- and four-year colleges and universities inthe United States and Puerto Rico a total of $2.8 million in cash andequipment. Each recipient package will include HP products and afaculty stipend valued at more than $69,000.

The higher education grants support course redesign to helpincrease the number of students graduating with degrees inengineering, computer science and business. The program aims toenhance student success as faculty members adopt technology-enhancedinstruction in their classrooms.

For example, instructors at Chandler-Gilbert Community College inChandler, Ariz., will integrate HP Tablet PCs into a redesign ofengineering and mathematics courses to increase retention of studentswho struggle with traditional lecture methodology. The HP Tablet PCswill allow students to engage in lectures through conceptual questionsand problems, virtual simulations, real-world examples and simulatedlabs. They also will enable instructors to gain instant feedback fromstudents, evaluate comprehension and immediately restructure lecturesaccording to student need.
