Glen-Gery Project Recognized at UK Brick Awards

WYOMISSING, Pa., Dec. 8, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- A project built with Glen-Gery Klaycoat brick, Carmel Place, was recently recognized in the international category at the 40^th Annual Brick Development Association Awards ceremony in London, England. The annual Brick Awards celebrates brick in every aspect of design and construction, recognizing the excellence of architects, brick contractors, brick and its manufacturers. It has established a reputation as one of the industry's most respected and well attended events.

nARCHITECTS' Carmel Place (formerly known as My Micro NY), with Monadnock Development, is the winning proposal in the adAPT NYC an initiative launched as part of former Mayor Bloomberg's administration's New Housing Marketplace Plan to accommodate the city's growing small household population.

Located in Kips Bay Manhattan, it is one of the first multi-unit Manhattan buildings using modular construction, and at the time of writing, the tallest modular building in New York City. The entire structure was clad with Glen-Gery Klaycoat brick.

The stunning project has picked up awards from a variety of associations. It was awarded LEED Silver Certification, an Architizer A+ Awards Finalist, the Innovation by Design Award 2016: Spaces, Places Cities, an AIA NY Chapter Design Honor Award, a Gold Brick in Architecture Award as well as the recent recognition in the UK awards.

The architects' aim was to provide a new social framework for small households that emphasizes nested scales of community rather than individual residents.  The 11-foot wide "towers" reflect this goal by celebrating the beauty of small dimensions, while not highlighting individual micro units on the exterior. The use of four shades of grey brick make connections to the project's local context, while also placing Carmel Place within New York's long legacy of brick used in housing.
