Experts Say Sugar, Not Laziness, Causing Obesity

(RTTNews) - If calories are not reduced, exercise alone can have no effect on obesity, says British Sports Medicine, a peer-reviewed journal of sport and exercise medicine. The journal says the blame for expanding waist lines is directly on the type and amount of calories consumed and the poor diet generates more disease than physical inactivity, alcohol and smoking combined.

The journal noted that 40 percent of people with normal body mass index will have metabolic abnormalities such as hypertension, abnormal amount of lipids in blood, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and cardiovascular disease, that are usually associated with obesity. The Journal says, there are wrong public perceptions that obesity is entirely due to lack of exercise and maintaining a healthy weight through calorie counting helps.

Editorial published in the Journal further said, the source of calories is crucial and sugar is a culprit that promotes fat storage and hunger, while fat calories induce fullness. The Journal asked to end the celebrity endorsement of sugary drinks and the association of junk food and sport. It further said legitimization of nutritionally deficient products is misleading and unscientific.
