Ericsson Launches 5GEx Project; Announces Austria Partnership With Salzburg Unit

(RTTNews) - Swedish mobile network equipment maker Ericsson (ERIC) Tuesday announced the launch of the 5G Exchange or 5GEx project, which aims to enable a unified European 5G infrastructure service market that integrates multiple operators and technologies.

5GEx project is a Phase 1 5G Infrastructure Public Private Partnership research and innovation project. It will focus on supporting cross-domain service orchestration over multiple administrations or multi-domain single administrations.

The 5GEx project runs from October 2015 to March 2018, and Ericsson will drive the project in cooperation with a range of industry partners.

Ericsson said it is already committed to a number of 5G research initiatives, including 5G for Europe and METIS II.

Separately, Ericsson said it is supporting Salzburg Netz GmbH, a unit of Salzburg AG, for smart meter integration in the city and federal state of Salzburg, Austria. Ericsson will provide a comprehensive IT back end solution for operating a planned 470,000 smart meters, along with systems integration and support services. By the year 2019, Salzburg Netz aims to provide 95 percent of their customers with smart meters.
