Deutsche Bank Championship and Tiger Woods Foundation Select Tiger Woods Learning Center and Eight Local Charities as 2006 Beneficiaries
NORTON, Mass., July 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Deutsche Bank and the Tiger Woods Foundation have selected the Tiger Woods Learning Center and eight New England-area charities as beneficiaries of the 2006 Deutsche Bank Championship, which will be held Aug. 29-Sept. 4 at the Tournament Players Club of Boston. Since its inception in 2003, the Deutsche Bank Championship has generated $4.5 million for charitable organizations.
The primary beneficiary of the Deutsche Bank Championship is the Tiger Woods Learning Center, with Artists for Humanity, G-Row Boston (Girls Row), St. Mary's Women and Children's Center and Young Entrepreneurs Alliance (YEA) returning as beneficiaries for the second consecutive year. The 2006 Deutsche Bank Championship also will benefit first-time recipients Mother Caroline Academy, Nativity Prep, Partners for Youth with Disabilities and Tenacity.
"We take immense pride in the high standard of charitable contribution we have set with the Deutsche Bank Championship," said Seth Waugh, CEO, Deutsche Bank Americas. "Our mission is to be a dedicated and involved corporate citizen in the communities where we live and work, so we are proud to help organizations in New England and across the US provide educational and other human services support for children and others in distressed communities. We believe in trying to give all children a fair chance to succeed."
"The Deutsche Bank Championship has provided significant assistance with the development of the Tiger Woods Learning Center, which opened earlier this year and is meeting its goal of developing our youth of today into tomorrow's leaders," said Tiger Woods. "I am grateful to the Championship for enabling my Foundation to share in the support of several of New England's prominent, charitable youth organizations. It is a pleasure to be able to help positively impact the lives of children and I look forward to our continued success."
"In conjunction with the Tiger Woods Foundation and the Deutsche Bank Americas Foundation, we wholeheartedly believe the eight New England-area charities we selected fully represent our charitable vision," said Championship Director Eric Baldwin. "Together we can make a difference by supporting established organizations which have made a difference in the lives of children in underserved areas.
The Deutsche Bank Championship foremost strives to be a community pillar and it is our belief that these charities, when provided with the necessary resources, can continue to promote education and instill self-esteem and confidence with our youth."
In addition, the Deutsche Bank Championship will be one of 35 PGA TOUR stops during the 2006 season featuring the AstraZeneca Charity Challenge. Now in its third season, the AstraZeneca Charity Challenge features a $100,000 donation each week -- half to WomanHeart, the national coalition for women with heart disease and half to the health care charity of the winning player's choice. By the end of the 2006 season, the AstraZeneca Charity Challenge will have donated a total of $3.5 million to various healthcare charities in the United States.
The Tiger Woods Learning Center (TWLC), located on 14-acres in Anaheim, California, is a youth-educational facility that will feature seven classrooms, a computer lab, multi-media center, a student lounge, a 250-seat auditorium and cafe. Activities at the TWLC are designed by kids and for kids. The TWLC will help thousands of students from diverse backgrounds broaden their perspective of the world, explore their interests and investigate new possibilities for the future. Courses offered center around math, science, technology and language arts. Its Orange County-based day, after-school and weekend programs focus on career orientation for grades 4-6, career exploration for grades 7-8 and career preparation for grades 9-12 as well as character development and community involvement. Artists for Humanity's mission is to provide underserved youth with the keys to self-sufficiency through paid employment in the arts. This mission is built on the philosophy that exposure to the arts is a powerful force for social change, and creative entrepreneurship through the arts is a productive and life-changing opportunity for young people. Bridging economic, racial and social divisions for 15 years, AFH works to restore urban neighborhoods by introducing young people's creativity to the business community.
G-Row Boston (Girls-Row Boston) is the first rowing and relationship-building program designed specifically for girls in the Boston public schools. G-Row builds girls' strength and confidence, and also aims to diversify the traditionally exclusive sport of rowing. The program was launched in 1998 under the vision of Olympic Gold medallist Holly Metcalf. Today, G-Row is a program of Community Rowing, Inc., and reaches over 200 girls each year. G-Row Boston provides girls with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn to row and compete on the Charles River. The girls practice three days per week throughout the school year to develop new skills, including on-water rowing and racing, weight and erg training, boat maintenance, swimming, and leadership skills development. The program also provides mentors, an academic tutoring program, and college advising. To date, nearly all G-Row graduates have gone on to college.
St. Mary's Women and Children's Center is a community-based human service agency that provides shelter, education and job training, and support services to women, teens, infants and children. A member of the Caritas Christi Health Care System, St. Mary's serves the largest population of homeless and low-income women and children in the city of Boston. St. Mary's started as a program for pregnant and parenting teens and their infants but quickly expanded its program offerings to better address the myriad of issues affecting at-risk women, children, and families. Located in North Dorchester, Mass., St. Mary's dates back to 1874, when an abandoned baby left on the doorstep of a Boston church eventually led to the creation of St. Mary's Infant Asylum at the agency's current Jones Hill location.
By 1902, St. Mary's was providing shelter and care to about 1,000 infants and unwed mothers who were likely to be cast out of their homes with nowhere to turn. For a century, St. Margaret's Hospital for Women shared the Jones Hill campus with St. Mary's until 1993 when the hospital moved its inpatient services to Brighton, establishing the current-day St. Mary's Women and Children's Center.
The Young Entrepreneurs Alliance (YEA) is a non-profit company dedicated to supporting teens at-risk for criminal behavior to turn their lives around through business ownership, job training, financial education and academic support. The YEA works with teens to build the skills they need to attain long-term economic independence. YEA's goal is to empower low opportunity teens to attain long-term economic independence. Through their businesses, our teen partners learn the professional and leadership skills they need to succeed in business, and to build lives as active, contributing American citizens. YEA was founded in 1996 by the father-daughter team of Robert and Julie Nessen. Today, YEA's expanded scope includes creating businesses in the Massachusetts Vocational Schools, particularly those serving teens in the Commonwealth's most disadvantaged urban communities.
The Mother Caroline Academy and Education Center serves financially-limited middle school girls while its adult education program offers courses for parents and adults from the larger Boston area. Its Shining Star program provides after-school instruction to third and fourth graders many of whom progress to our Academy. Established in 1993, the founders of MCAEC envisioned the school would be located in the Grove Hall Neighborhood of Dorchester. MCAEC programs are funded entirely through the support of individuals, corporations and private foundations. Its academic and enrichment programs are generously staffed and supported by a large volunteer community. The success of Mother Caroline Academy & Education Center attests to the power of its vision; "where there is great love there are always miracles."
Nativity Prep, founded in 1990, is dedicated to providing a quality, tuition-free education to boys of all faiths from low-income families residing in Boston. In the Jesuit tradition, Nativity Prep promotes the intellectual, moral, athletic and social development of its students. Its goal is to provide a highly structured, challenging education that prepares students for admission to prestigious high schools and for the rigors of a college education. The success of the Nativity Prep model school has garnered national attention and the model is actively being replicated in other urban middle schools around the country. The school's focus is not solely academic. Through our educational, spiritual, cultural, social and athletic programs, Nativity Prep promotes the growth of the whole person. The Nativity Prep student is taught not only to believe in his own self-worth, but also to understand his responsibility to serve others. Our hope is that Nativity Prep graduates will enjoy successful, productive careers and make significant contributions to their communities.
Partners for Youth with Disabilities, Inc. (PYD) is committed to empowering young people with disabilities to reach their full potential for personal development. This is done by providing high quality one-to-one and group mentoring programs where adult mentors with disabilities act as positive role models and provide support, understanding and guidance for youth as they strive to reach their personal, educational and career goals. It is the PYD's vision to become a national leader in promoting mentoring programs for youth and young adults with disabilities through development of model one-to-one and group mentoring services that improve the lives of young people in areas such as self-esteem, independent living, recreation, health, leadership, education and career development.
PYD will promote mentoring through its National Disability Mentoring Council by expanding its mentoring programs to reach youth across Massachusetts, and by providing training and technical assistance to others on a national level interested in developing mentoring programs for people with disabilities in their regions of the country. PYD serves youth throughout Massachusetts -- the Greater Boston area, Western Massachusetts and Lawrence -- and is expanding its presence throughout the country.
Tenacity, incorporated in January 1999 as a not-for-profit organization, is a year round youth development organization that offers free tennis instruction and academic enrichment to over 3,000 Boston youth in the summer and intensive after-school programs that combine tennis instruction/competition and academic support with a focus on life-skills. Its philosophical goals are: 1) To improve the scholastic, character and physical development of urban youth by combining tennis instruction/competition and academic support, with a focus on life-skills; 2) To build sound values by letting children experience the link between success on the court and commitment to a disciplined training schedule; 3) To enhance academic performance by enabling youngsters to see the connections between excelling on the court and in the classroom; 4) To provide the opportunity for Boston's youth to pursue tennis as a life long activity during their high school, college, and business career. Some may actually pursue a competitive tournament career. Tenacity's long-term goals are to be the top sports and academic youth program in Boston, to serve 4,000 children in the summer, annually, and an additional 1,000 students in the school-year by 2009 and to become a national role model and catalyst for other communities. Over $5 million in donations and pledges have been raised since its inception. Tenacity employs 12 full-time staff, over 90 full-time seasonal employees and over 125 tutors.
