Dell Leads Effort to Help Transform Tennessee Health Care; Dell CEO, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, Tennessee Governor Lead Symposium to Accelerate Information-Technology Adoption

Dell CEO Kevin Rollins convened health care, government andtechnology leaders here today to develop strategies to modernize theU.S. health care system, including more rapid adoption of informationtechnology (IT) in Tennessee.

Participants included U.S. Secretary of Health and Human ServicesMichael Leavitt, Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen and U.S. Reps. MarshaBlackburn and Jim Cooper.

"Today's symposium is about public and private organizationsdeepening their partnerships, and embracing approaches through whichhealth care can be more effectively delivered and managed," said DellCEO Kevin Rollins. "For that to happen, government at all levels mustcreate new incentives for the adoption of more modern IT acrossAmerica's health-care system, and businesses must take more initiativeto drive change."

In a related move, Dell today announced that it would be one ofthe largest U.S. employers to offer its employees personal healthrecords with claims-import functionality, resulting in easy onlineaccess to up-to-date health histories.

"Accelerating e-Health in Nashville" was hosted by Dell, incooperation with the Nashville Technology Council, the Technology CEOCouncil (TCC) and the Tennessee chapter of the Healthcare InformationManagement Systems Symposium (HIMSS). Dell hosted a similar event inNorth Carolina in November 2005.

Symposium attendees discussed recommendations for addressingchallenges such as sharing clinical data, accelerating the success ofregional health information organizations and facilitating provideradoption of health care IT.

"Health information technology has the potential to transform thequality of health care available for all Tennesseans," said GovernorBredesen. "I am proud of the role that Tennessee is playing in theadvancement and advocacy of electronic medical records. We are one ofonly five states that have received a $5 million grant from the U.S.Department of Health and Human Services to take this technology to thenext level. Dell is a major corporate citizen here in Tennessee, andwe appreciate the leadership role that they have taken in this arena."

Tennessee ranks fourth overall in receipt of federal funds for thedevelopment of electronic medical records and related healthinformatics technology.

"We have an opportunity to foster a collaborative health careecosystem that can build a technological infrastructure to benefitpeople all across the state," said Antoine Agassi, chair of theGovernor's eHealth Advisory Council. "Because of the priority thatGovernor Bredesen has placed on this initiative and the level offederal investment we have received, Tennessee is uniquely positionedto create a model that will be useful in both Tennessee and the nationat large."

Dell, as part of the TCC, last year launched a report titled "AHealthy System: How improved information management can transform thequality, efficiency and value of Americans' health care."

TCC members use the report to emphasize the importance of creatingdialogue between policy makers, industry leaders and communities totransform the U.S. health care system.

Dell, which market research firm IDC has ranked sixth in revenuefor health care among all IT vendors worldwide(a), has had a dedicatedbusiness unit serving those customers for more than seven years.

Middle Tennessee is home to about 3,500 Dell employees who work infulfillment, sales and technical support in Nashville and computermanufacturing in nearby Lebanon.
