Cabot Corporation Introduces a Series of Advanced Activated Carbons for Vapor Capture in Gasoline Fueled Vehicles

Cabot Corporation (NYSE: CBT) today introduced NORIT® CNR 120 extruded activated carbon, the first product in a series of specialized activated carbons optimized for maximum adsorption and desorption of volatile hydrocarbons. The product also enables the control of both diurnal bleed loss and onboard refueling vapor recovery (ORVR) in automotive evaporative loss control devices (ELCD) found in gasoline fueled vehicles.

As emission regulations become more rigorous in China, Europe and the United States, control of the adsorption and desorption of volatile hydrocarbons is a major focus of auto manufacturers in these regions. Activated carbon is the most common technology used for controlling evaporative fuel emissions in gasoline vehicles worldwide. In recent lab tests performed by Sterling Performance, Milford, Michigan, the high purge efficiency and low bleed emissions capability of NORIT CNR 120 activated carbon adsorbed higher levels of volatile hydrocarbons and desorbed a maximum flow of hydrocarbon back into the air intake more efficiently than alternative activated carbons serving the industry today. The unique properties and performance of this product enable a single activated carbon grade to be used for controlling both diurnal bleed loss and ORVR.

"During refueling, the activated carbon in a vehicle’s ELCD canister must efficiently adsorb a large amount of hydrocarbon vapors quickly, upwards of 60 grams per minute. Then, when the vehicle is running, fresh air flows backwards to purge the activated carbon. The hydrocarbon mixture is then fed to the intake manifold as part of the fuel intake and burned,” explained Trevor Goodrich, PhD., global marketing manager, Automotive, for Cabot’s Purification Solutions segment. "Achieving a high gasoline working capacity with a high purge efficiency but a low bleed emission, or leakage of gasoline when engine is not in use, is an extremely difficult technical challenge. Our CNR 120 extruded activated carbon is unique by enabling these properties in a single product. By using a single activated carbon grade rather than a series of different capacity carbons, the design of ELCD systems will be simplified significantly.”

Our activated carbons for evaporative emission control applications are pelletized and offer optimal particle size in relation to pressure drop, hardness, density, and flow characteristics enabling the desired performance using less material. This is especially important for evolving canister designs that are increasing canister volumes to capture more vapor and promote maximum air flow for purging.
