Aurora Recovery Centre Welcomes Province's Proposed Mental Health & Addictions Strategy
WINNIPEG, May 14, 2018 /CNW/ - Aurora Recovery Centre welcomes the recent recommendations for improving public accessibility to integrated addictions and mental health treatment in Manitoba.
The new strategy for addictions and mental health was presented on May 14th, with development by Virgo Planning and Evaluation Consultants Incorporated.
Since its opening in 2016, Aurora's private treatment programs have been meeting the goals outlined in the new proposed provincial strategy, including providing immediate accessibility to the full spectrum of treatment services, integrated treatment for addictions and mental health, family treatment and support, traditional healing and spiritual practices, personalized treatment, and post-treatment support.
"I would not be here today if I had not received immediate help for my addiction when I first came to treatment services nearly 15 years ago," said Paul D. Melnuk, Founder and Chairman of Aurora Recovery Centre. He said the wait times for public treatment services are great obstacles for people seeking recovery.
"When someone is ready to get help, or their family members are not willing to watch the disease destroy the addict further, immediate treatment must be available. Hospital detox followed by immediate discharge without follow-up treatment does not serve anyone in recovery."
Aurora also supports the strategy's intent to better integrate addiction and mental health disorders. Addiction and mental health are inextricably connected; most people suffering from addictions also suffer from underlying forms of anxiety, depression, PTSD and many forms of trauma.
"Without fully integrated continuity of services, these people are destined to repeat the vicious cycle of using, detoxing and using again until something tragic happens," said Melnuk.
Aurora Recovery Centre is a private treatment facility in Gimli, MB that concurrently treats addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders with holistic, evidence-based therapies. Aurora's treatment programs are personalized to suit member needs on a case-by-case basis and include 12-step philosophies, counselling, adjunctive, psychiatric and spiritual therapies, relationship integration programs and continuing care. Aurora also uses more advanced mental health therapies like eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR) therapies to treat the long-term emotional effects of trauma.
