Amgen established the teacher awards program to demonstrate thecompany's commitment to advancing science education. Since theprogram's inception in 1992, Amgen has awarded more than one milliondollars to educators who have made exceptional science-teachingcontributions and who have had a measurable impact on the lives oftheir students.
"Each of the award recipients has demonstrated their ability toassess the needs of their students, develop innovative educationaltechniques and inspire science learning in their students. We aregrateful to their dedication to students and we are thrilled to honorthem as the 2006 Amgen Science Teacher Award winners," said PhyllisPiano, vice president of Corporate Communications and Philanthropy,Amgen.
The 15 selected winners within the United States will receive thefollowing benefits:
-- An unrestricted cash award of $5,000;
-- A restricted $5,000 cash grant to the recipient's school for the expansion or enhancement of a school science program, science resources, or the professional development of the school's science teachers; and,
-- Recognition at an awards banquet.
In Puerto Rico, four teachers will be honored, each receiving anunrestricted cash award of $2,500 and a restricted $2,500 cash grant.
Nominations are solicited every Fall and a panel of independentjudges selects the winners based on the following criteria: creativityof teaching method; effectiveness in the classroom; motivationalability; instructional ability; and the plan for the use of grantmoney to improve science education resources in their schools.
