COLOMBIA: Country Defends FARC Peace Agreement In The United Nations
(RTTNews) - The Colombian government defended before the Human Rights Council of the United Nations the peace agreement with the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and recognized that implementing the deal will be challenging.
"The government of President [Juan Manuel] Santos has shown a commitment to promoting a culture of human rights through the search for peace, equality, and education. Today Colombia is a country very different from that of a few decades ago," said the Colombian Interior Minister, Guillermo Rivera Flores.
He recalled the signing of the peace agreement between Colombia and the FARC on November 24, 2016, and stressed that the government is negotiating a similar treaty with the National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrilla and said that both processes "are not exempt from challenges and difficulties."
Flores mentioned that there was progress about since the peace agreement with the FARC, such as the reduction of violence to levels last seen 42 years ago.
