Yahoo Accused Of Letting Government Spy On Emails
(RTTNews) - Yahoo reportedly developed a software and used it to spy on all of its customers' incoming emails to help U.S. intelligence agencies.
A report from Reuters, citing people familiar with the matter, accuses that Yahoo scanned YahooMail accounts at the request of the National Security Agency or FBI. The software spied on incoming emails of hundreds of millions of accounts.
However, Yahoo has denied building any spying software to scan all of its customers' emails. "Yahoo is a law abiding company, and complies with the laws of the United States," the company said in a brief statement in response to Reuters.
This is the first case that has been reported where a U.S. Internet company agreed to spy all incoming emails for a federal agency. Earlier, tech companies have checked stored messages or scanned a small number of accounts.
According to Reuters report, the departure of Chief Information Security Officer Alex Stamos in June 2015 was a protest against CEO Marissa Mayer's decision to help the federal agency.
