WJ Announces Sample Availability of Industry-First Integrated Transceiver IC for RFID Applications; SiGe System-on-a-Chip Available for Samples to Partner Companies

    Business Editors/High-Tech Editors

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 10, 2005--WJ Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq:WJCI), a leading designer and supplier of RF semiconductors and RF modules, today announced that it has begun a program of Alpha sampling to select partner companies, the WTX1000, the industry-first integrated transceiver IC, specifically targeted for the RFID market. This multi-protocol RFID transceiver ASIC supports EPC Class 0, 1, and Gen2 while operating at UHF frequencies. The WTX1000 ASIC provides the complete transmit and receive functions for a multi-protocol RFID reader. Advantages of using this integrated device include a reduction in component count, high performance, high reliability, and smaller size thus reducing overall system costs and enabling more compact designs.
"WJ's expertise in Radio Frequency (RF) has allowed us to achieve this major milestone of delivering a system-on-a-chip solution to the RFID market. Our mission is to provide enabling technology platforms to major OEMs to facilitate their Multi-Protocol RFID Reader development. The WTX1000 ASIC is a key step toward that direction," said Michael Farese, Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer and President for WJ Communications. "The Alpha sampling program will give partner companies an early opportunity to evaluate and design with the transceiver chip and to prototype complete readers. We expect feedback on the features and performance of the WTX1000 from our partner companies and will be working with them to enhance future generations of this chip."

    Product Overview

This RFID Reader chipset (consisting of the WTX1000 and WJ power amplifier IC) is a complete homodyne transceiver including synthesizer, modulator, transmitter, power amplifier and receiver. Form factors as small as PC Card(TM), SDIO and CompactFlash(R) and others can potentially be achieved for RFID reader/programmers with this enabling ASIC technology. Technical features include; operating frequencies (860-960 MHz and 2.4 GHz), frequency hopping, US and International band, operating temperature of -20 to +70(degree)C and storage temperature of -40 to +85(degree) C. This ASIC supports EPC Class 0 and Class 1, and forward specs such as UHF Gen2. This ASIC may be used to design readers which are FCC and ETSI compliant and the WTX1000 enables a host of reader/programmer solutions like portal readers, handhelds, printers, and applicators.
