UPS Gives $3 Million for Asia Tsunami Relief; Company Will Ship Emergency Supplies, Give Cash Grants to Relief Organizations and Match Employee Donations

    Business Editors

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 5, 2005--UPS announced today that it will provide $3 million in aid to those areas devastated by the tsunamis across Southeast Asia. UPS is donating $2.5 million in in-kind services, $400,000 in cash grants to relief organizations and up to $100,000 in employee-matching contributions.
UPS is airlifting much-needed medical supplies and other emergency relief items to Asia over the next several weeks. The company will provide lift to a designated list of professional disaster relief organizations. UPS is prepared to ship up to one million pounds of emergency relief supplies weekly via air, ocean and ground from Europe, Asia and the Americas.
The UPS Foundation, UPS's charitable arm, will donate a total of $400,000 - $200,000 to the American Red Cross Tsunami Relief Fund and $200,000 to other emergency relief organizations.
"We have been in close contact with a number of relief organizations and government officials to make sure we deliver what is most needed," said UPS Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mike Eskew. "But our commitment will extend beyond the immediate crisis. UPS will help affected countries rebuild over the long-term, and we are working to determine how we can best help in the months ahead."
Based on the tremendous outpouring of concern from employees around the world, The UPS Foundation also is providing a match of individual employee contributions. Already, UPS employees in Asia have been offering donations. UPS employees in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and India have collected necessary supplies such as clothing and blankets, which are being transported to the impacted areas. UPS engineers will offer logistics expertise to find the most timely, efficient mode of transport.
"Yesterday President Bush asked for the private sector to step up its relief efforts for the victims of this terrible tragedy. UPS is proud to do its part," Eskew said.

UPS is the world's largest package delivery company and a global leader in supply chain services, offering an extensive range of options for synchronizing the movement of goods, information and funds.
