Univision Communications Launches Univision Home Entertainment; Partners With Ventura's Studio Latino To Distribute DVD Line Under Unicine Label

    Business Editors/Entertainment Editors

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 16, 2005--Univision Communications Inc. (NYSE:UVN), the leading Spanish-language media company in the U.S., today announced the formation of Univision Home Entertainment and launch of its DVD label Unicine. Univision Home Entertainment will release content from the Univision Television Networks' extensive Spanish-language movie library to meet the demand for DVD entertainment in the Hispanic community.
Ventura Entertainment's Studio Latino, the leading distributor of Latino home entertainment, will distribute and market the DVDs under the Unicine label. All Unicine titles will be first-time DVD releases for U.S. audiences, and will be available at Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Tower Records and Circuit City, among other locations where DVDs are sold.
Univision Home Entertainment will be based in Los Angeles and led by Univision Television Group President Michael D. Wortsman.
"The addition of Univision Home Entertainment to the Univision Communications family continues the brand extension philosophy successfully deployed with the additions of Univision Radio, Univision Music Group and Univision Online," said Wortsman. "By launching a home entertainment business, Univision is once again demonstrating its commitment to serving the U.S. Hispanic community by providing Spanish-language entertainment options to meet the needs of this underserved but influential and growing population."
Joseph Acevedo and David Polo, Directors of Business Development for Univision Home Entertainment, commented, "A significant opportunity exists to increase sales of Spanish-language DVDs in the United States. The tremendous reach of our television, radio and internet properties coupled with the reach of Studio Latino, a leader in this developing genre, will play a key role in helping us realize that opportunity."
"Univision's stature among Spanish-speaking consumers elevates the entire Latino DVD category for the industry and will be a catalyst for even more growth in this genre," said Chris Lynch, Executive Vice President & General Manager, Ventura Entertainment.
"It is our privilege to be associated with such a trusted leader in Spanish-language media," said Concepcion Lara, Senior Vice President, Studio Latino. "By partnering with Univision Home Entertainment, we are providing the millions of Hispanics in this country with yet another choice for Spanish-language entertainment."
The first ten Unicine titles will be available beginning May 24, 2005, and will include the following action, comedy and drama feature films: "La Diosa del Puerto," "Taquito de Ojo," "Corazon de Tequila," "Secuestro," "Sinaloa," "Compadres a la Mexicana," "Escuadron de la Muerte," "El Fisgon del Hotel," "Verdugo de Traidores," and "Asalto en Tijuana."
Only 1% of the 1 billion DVDs sold in the U.S. last year were in Spanish. This presents a significant opportunity, as Hispanic Americans now make up 14% of the total U.S. population with $715 billion in annual buying power today. It's estimated that by 2010, the Hispanic community will have more than $1 trillion in buying power. Thirty-four million Hispanic Americans, or 84% of the U.S. Hispanic population, have access to a DVD player. In addition, studies show that Hispanics rent and buy more DVDs than non-Hispanics.
