Tyson Foods To Eliminate Use Of Antibiotics In Chicken By 2017
(RTTNews) - Tyson Foods Inc. (TSN) Tuesday said it plans to eliminate the use of human antibiotics from its chicken production, as the meat producing giant joins other peers who have taken similar steps in the wake of health concerns.
Tyson Foods said it is striving to eliminate the use of antibiotics from its U.S. broiler chicken flocks by the end of September 2017.
"Antibiotic resistant infections are a global health concern," said Donnie Smith, president and CEO of Tyson Foods. "We're confident our meat and poultry products are safe, but want to do our part to responsibly reduce human antibiotics on the farm so these medicines can continue working when they're needed to treat illness."
"We'll use the best available treatments to keep our chickens healthy, under veterinary supervision," Smith added.
Tyson Foods said it has already stopped using all antibiotics in its 35 broiler hatcheries, requires a veterinary prescription for antibiotics used on broiler farms and has reduced human antibiotics used to treat broiler chickens by more than 80 percent since 2011.
Tyson's decision follows a similar action taken by several other meat producers, restaurant chains and retailers. Typically, chicken and cattle farmers use accepted but small amount of antibiotics, however, lately concerns have been raised that when consumers eat the food products their exposure to antibiotics enhance the survival of a stronger bacteria and consequently impairs immunity.
Last month, McDonald's (MCD) said its restaurants in the U.S. would source antibiotics-free chicken within two years in order to protect immunity in consumers. McDonald's will also offer customers milk jugs of low-fat white milk and fat-free chocolate milk from cows that are not treated with an artificial growth hormone known as rbST.
Earlier, fast-food chain Chick-fil-A Inc., Panera Bread Co. and Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. all had announced their decision to serve antibiotic-free chicken.
Tyson said it is also forming working groups with independent farmers and others in the company's beef, pork and turkey supply chains to discuss ways to reduce the use of human antibiotics on cattle, hog and turkey farms.
Meanwhile, Smith clarified that the announcement will not materially affect the company's financial performance.
TSN is currently trading at $39.35, up $0.44 or 1.14%, on the NYSE.
