TracFone Wireless Offers Free Cell Phone With 300 Minutes to Eligible Katrina Hurricane Evacuees
Last month, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved aplan to provide financial support from the Federal Universal ServiceFund (USF) to provide telecommunications services to persons who weredisplaced from their homes as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Inresponse to the FCC's request for wireless support, TracFone Wirelesscreated a program to assist Hurricane Katrina evacuees and launched atoll-free number 1-800-800-9873 where evacuees can inquire abouteligibility and get more information on the free service.

In order to be eligible for the free cell phone, the applicantmust have lived in an area affected by Hurricane Katrina, asdetermined by FEMA, and have been approved by FEMA to receiveemergency housing assistance. Applicant must provide TracFone with acopy of the FEMA grant letter advising them they are eligible toreceive support, present a copy of a Federal or state-issued I.D. andmust answer eligibility questions in writing. Information can be faxedto 1-800-927-2757 for review and approval. After the information isverified, TracFone will ship the package to the applicant's currentaddress.
The TracFone Katrina Lifeline Package includes 300 minutes ofairtime, one year of service, battery and charger. Customers whopurchase additional airtime during their service year will receivetwice the amount of minutes for each airtime card purchased orhalf-price minutes. To assist potential recipients, TracFone'stoll-free access number provides an easy-to-follow recorded messagewith options to repeat the informational steps for clarification.
