Toyota May Sales Down 9.6%

(RTTNews) - Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A., Inc. (TM) Wednesday reported May sales of 219,339 vehicles, a drop of 9.6 percent from last year.

Sales at the namesake division in May slipped 9.5 percent from a year ago to 192,657 units and Lexus division sales declined 10.1 percent to 26,682 units.

Toyota division car slumped 14.9 percent from a year ago to 96,019 units, hurt by weakness in Yaris, Prius, Camry, and Avalon sales. Lexus division car sales dropped 22.9 percent from a year ago to 11,695 units.

Toyota division truck sales slipped 3.4 percent to 96,638 units, hurt by weak sales of Highlander and Sienna. Lexus division truck sales rose 3.4 percent to 14,987 units, driven by sales of RX brand.

"Industry sales remain steady in May with the shift toward light trucks and SUVs continuing," said Bill Fay, Toyota division group vice president and general manager. "Mirroring that trend, Toyota division SUVs had a best-ever month, led by RAV4, Highlander and 4Runner."
