Toronto Star Manages Single Copy Sales with Mobile Delivery System from 3G Touch Solutions and Intermec Technologies

CONCORD, Ontario and EVERETT, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 19, 2005--3G Touch Solutions and Intermec Technologies Corp. have teamed to provide a mobile delivery system to the Toronto Star to manage its single copy sales. The system integrates 3G Touch's software with Intermec 760 mobile computers to deliver real-time sales management data to the Star's distribution management system.
The mobile delivery system capitalizes on the ability of the Intermec 760's GPRS radio to transfer data in real time over Rogers Wireless Communications' network, the largest in Canada. The Toronto Star began rolling out the system in April.
The mobile delivery system eliminates paper route delivery sheets and provides real-time draw and returns information for boxes and stores. Using the system, the Star has realized improvements in newsstand inventory -- or draw -- management, vendor relationships and internal reporting.
"Our previous single copy sales processes were very paper-intensive, which was time consuming and slowed the flow of information to our management system," said Robert Foster, IT manager circulation for the Toronto Star Media Group. "3G Touch and Intermec really understood our business processes and built a solution that is simple to use and integrates seamlessly with our distribution management system."
"The Toronto Star needed a solution tailored to the unique requirements of its single copy newspaper sales management system," said John Alexandriw, president of 3G Touch Solutions. "The mobile delivery system takes full advantage of Intermec's 760 mobile computers and Rogers' ubiquitous wireless network to stream real-time single copy sales data to the Star for the first time."
"The team from 3G Touch Solutions built an effective solution that delivers the exact data the Star's circulation management needs, while keeping the user interface simple and easy to use," said Les Mesh, vice president of Intermec's Canada group. "By eliminating the inefficiencies of paper forms, the Star has more accurate and timely information at its fingertips, allowing it to significantly improve inventory management of the paper's single copy sales."
