The Salvation Army on Standby for Hurricane Harvey
ALEXANDRIA, Va., Aug. 25, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) in Texas and along the Gulf Coast is prepared to provide physical, emotional, and spiritual care to survivors and relief workers. Hurricane Harvey is expected to make landfall late Friday evening or early Saturday morning.
Hurricane Harvey was recently upgraded to a Category 3 storm with sustained winds exceeding 125 miles per hour. In addition to catastrophic winds, the storm is expected to leave 15 to 25 inches of rain, with some communities receiving as much as 35 inches.
In response to Hurricane Harvey, The Salvation Army is doing the following:
- Deploying 42 mobile kitchens and two field kitchens
- Each mobile kitchen can feed more than 1,500 people per day
- Staging a 10,000 square-foot emergency supply center with clean-up kits, water and food
- Positioning leadership teams in San Antonio, Galveston/Texas County, Houston and Corpus Christi
- Coordinating with federal disaster responders and supporting operations at FEMA's National Response Coordination Center in Washington, D.C.
