The New York Times Student Journalism Institute Announces 2011 Participants in Annual Program

The New York Times Student Journalism Institute today announced the participants admitted into its annual program with the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), to be held from Jan. 2 to 16, 2011 at Florida International University in Miami.

The institute is a 14-day, hands-on journalism residency program offered to aspiring reporters, editors, photographers, video journalists, multimedia producers and designers who are current student members of the NAHJ. The students will have the opportunity to sharpen their writing, reporting, editing, photography and multimedia skills while covering current events in the Miami area and working under newsroom deadlines. They will learn under the supervision of professional journalists from The New York Times, The Boston Globe and the Times Company’s Regional Media Group.

"Since its launch in 2003, the institute has provided first-rate training and mentoring to more than 300 students,” said William E. Schmidt, deputy managing editor, The New York Times. "This program underscores our dedication to the field and to our next generation of journalists.”

"Our collaboration with the NAHJ on this initiative has been essential in reaching aspiring Latino journalists,” said Desiree Dancy, chief diversity officer and vice president, corporate human resources, The New York Times Company. "This institute strives to create a pipeline of young diverse talent and further demonstrates the Times Company’s commitment to diversity and inclusion in the workplace.”

The 23 students selected for this year’s program represent 15 colleges and universities from around the country. The program accepts applications from promising students in any class year who are in good academic standing and have worked for at least one semester on a student publication. A panel of journalists at The Times selects the students based on applications that include an essay and work samples.

The 2011 students are Jacqueline Baylon, Texas State University–San Marcos; Natalia Bonilla Berrios, University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus; Emily Canal, New York University; Sergio Candido, Florida Atlantic University; Roberto Daza, University of California, Berkeley; Marisa Gerber, University of Arizona; Laura Gonzalez, California State University Northridge; Parisa Hajizadeh-Amini, University of Arizona; Laura Herrera, University of Missouri–Columbia; Carolina Hidalgo, Stony Brook University; Ellen Hirst, University of Nebraska–Lincoln; Kassandra Lau, University of Arizona; Nancy Lopez, University of California, Berkeley; Ignacio Marquez, California State University Northridge; Alejandra Matos, University of Texas at El Paso; Laura Morel, Emerson College; Allison Mullally, University of Arizona; Sigourney Nuñez, California State University Northridge; Abigal Raminez Ortiz, University of New Mexico; Isadora Sala Rangel, Florida International University; Kristofer Rios, Columbia University; Jacelle Roman-Sauberan, University of Arizona; and Marina D. Sandoval, California State University Northridge.

The New York Times Journalism Institute offers two programs each year. In cooperation with the Black College Communication Association and the National Association of Black Journalists, an Institute is held each May at Dillard University in New Orleans. That program was created in 2003. In 2007, a companion program was introduced in collaboration with the NAHJ and designed for its student members. That program is held each January, alternating between the University of Arizona in Tucson and Florida International University in Miami. The Student Journalism Institute now has 306 graduates. Among the major news organizations around the nation, at which these graduates have been interns or are now employees, are The Associated Press, The Boston Globe, the Chicago Tribune, The Dallas Morning News, The Houston Chronicle, the Los Angeles Times, The Miami Herald, Newsday, The New York Times, The Oregonian and The Washington Post.
