Telefonica Brasil Selects Lucent Technologies to Expand Its Broadband

    SAO PAULO, Brazil--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 18, 2005--Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) announced today that it has signed a R$26 million (approximately US$10 million) agreement with Telefonica to expand the operator's ADSL access network in the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Lucent Worldwide Services will deploy Internet Protocol (IP) and ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) access to 180,000 lines for Telefonica. With this project Lucent increases its share of broadband access concentrators in the Telefonica network to reach a total of 400,000 ADSL ports.
    Under the terms of the agreement, Lucent will also supply a new customized solution to deliver broadband access to remote areas, consisting of rugged outside cabinets and the mini-DSLAM Stinger(R) (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer). This jointly developed solution will enable Telefonica to expand its network capabilities while leveraging its existing investment in its network.
    Lucent's compact mini-DSLAM is designed for locations that cannot accommodate large equipment, such as condominiums and apartments and other areas where the larger ADSL equipment will not fit.

    Lucent has installed more than 28,000 Stinger(R) access concentrators in more than 25 countries. Lucent's Stinger(R) ADSL broadband concentrators are produced in the company's facility in Brazil.

    Stinger(R) is a DSLAM - Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer - equipped with 14 slots on boards that handle up to 72 users. Each unit has the capacity for 1,008 ADSL access ports. Lucent's access concentrator leads the market in density measured in number of doors per cabinet, accommodating 3,024 ports, which enables cost savings and infrastructure optimization in the implementation of the network.
    Stinger(R) operates IP and ATM technologies simultaneously, which helps ensure the flexibility and safety required by Telefonica to design the network to accommodate the range of new services, such as video, voice or data. The Stinger(R) concentrator has many network interfaces: E1 IMA, E3 ATM, STM-1, STM-4, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet.
