Symbol Mobile Computers Selected by Alaska Department of Fish and Game for Electronic Sampling Solution

HOLTSVILLE, N.Y., Jan. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Symbol Technologies, Inc. , The Enterprise Mobility Company(TM), today announced that the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) is using Symbol mobile computers for capturing and managing data collected from fish caught and tracked off the coast of Southeast Alaska. The project is aimed at improving efficiency and reducing the potential for error in sensitive data collection.

The Symbol rugged mobile computing solution -- which includes software created in-house at ADF&G -- has improved operational efficiencies, replacing a complex paper-based system and allowing sample data to be available in real-time instead of 10 days later. Since implementing the Symbol solution, ADF&G data samplers have collected information more accurately and improved their productivity.

ADF&G selected Symbol SPT1800, PDT8100 and PPT8800 mobile computers to read and collect information that is stored on tags implanted in each of the 45 million fish that the department tracks annually. Calculating salmon survival rates and analyzing migration routes and straying rates helps biologists monitor and track the effectiveness of Alaska's hatchery enhancement programs and habitat management practices. This data is also used to calculate hatchery contributions for determining accurate cost recovery payments to hatcheries.
