Symantec CEO to Keynote at RSA Conference 2005; Symantec Executives to Participate in Panel Discussions

    CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 9, 2005--Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq:SYMC), the global leader in information security, today announced that John W. Thompson, Symantec's chairman and chief executive officer, will keynote at the RSA(R) Conference 2005 on Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 10:35 a.m. PT. Other Symantec speakers include Charles Breed, senior director of Mergers and Acquisitions; Peter Szor, chief researcher; Kimberly Legelis, director of Industry Solutions; Lawrence Dietz, director of Solutions and Strategy; Chris Wysopal, director of Development; and Matt Conover, senior software engineer. The RSA Conference 2005 is being held Feb. 14-18 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.
    In his keynote, Thompson will discuss the future of security and how the industry will need to evolve to continue to serve customers.     Breed will participate in two panel discussions at the conference. At 2 p.m. PT on Tuesday, Feb. 15, he will speak on the panel "Security Industry and Technology Consolidation," part of the Professional Development educational track, to explore possible outcomes for the security industry as it evolves to the point of mainstream acceptance. At 2 p.m. PT on Thursday, Feb. 17, Breed will participate on the panel "The Future of the Security Market: Innovation vs. Integration," part of the Business of Security educational track, to discuss the information security market's medium and long-term future and how this will affect security managers and investors.
    Szor will be part of the panel "The Art of Computer Virus Research," part of the Security Solutions educational track, on Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 3:25 p.m. PT. This panel will examine malicious code analysis techniques to help security analysts better understand how malicious code operates and is analyzed and, in turn, enable the deployment of better defenses against increasingly complex threats.
    Legelis will participate in the panel "Phishing: The Attacks and Countermeasures," part of the Hackers and Threats educational track, on Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m. PT. This panel will consider how even though much of the fight against phishing has focused on education, technology is needed to ensure long-term trust in the connected world. The panel will also discuss trends and attacks phishers use, and ways to prevent them.
    Dietz will join the panel "Sarbanes-Oxley Part II: Security Governance in Practice," part of the Privacy, Law, and Policy educational track, on Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 4:50 p.m. PT. This panel will continue discussions from an earlier panel, including further exploration of practical risk management issues, and will give consideration to the fact that corporate information is now generated, stored, and retrieved on highly interdependent and interconnected IT systems and networks.
    Wysopal will participate in the panel "Developing Secure Software: Finding and Remediating Security Flaws before they are in Production," part of the Developers educational track, on Friday, Feb. 18, at 9 a.m. PT. This panel will discuss static vs. dynamic security analysis. Panelists will also examine when and why to use automated and manual security testing methods and evaluate the appropriate procedures and technologies for software code security and protection of confidential corporate information.
    Conover's presentation "Advancements in Malware and Rootkit Profiling," part of the Hackers and Threats II track, is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 18, at 9 a.m. PT. The presentation will discuss the current handling of malware and rootkits and new profiling mechanisms on the horizon.
