Steven M. Smith Named Executive Vice President, Survey Operations, Arbitron Inc.

Arbitron Inc. (NYSE: ARB) announced today that Steven M. Smith has been appointed executive vice president, Survey Operations, reporting to Steve Morris, chairman, president and chief executive officer, Arbitron Inc.

Mr. Smith, who will be based at the Arbitron Research and Technology Center in Columbia, Md., succeeds Claire Kummer, who is taking on the new position of executive vice president and chief quality officer.

Mr. Smith will be responsible for all of Arbitrons survey operations for both the Portable People Meter and diary-based radio ratings services, including accountability for successfully completing the roll out of the Portable People Meter to the top 50 markets.

Mr. Smith will direct the Arbitron teams that recruit consumers to participate in surveys, deliver PPMs and diaries to survey respondents, motivate these respondents to fulfill their commitment to the Arbitron survey process and tabulate the media and marketing information provided by 1.5 million plus survey participants annually.

Mr. Smith will be charged with the development of new operating processes and systems to deliver more precise representation of the key demographics in PPM and diary samples. He will also enhance the companys ability to measure small markets, niche media audiences and new audio sources, including the Internet and satellite.

As executive vice president, Survey Operations, Mr. Smith will oversee more than 800 employees.

From 2003 to 2006, Mr. Smith was the executive vice president, North American Operations for Information Resources, Inc., a global, market research firm serving the consumer goods industry. In that position, he directed the teams that gathered and analyzed point-of-sale data from over 35,000 retailers and a standing panel of 70,000 consumers. His organization also presented findings to retailers marketing research teams to guide product development, launch, promotions, and decision-making. He joined Information Resources as senior vice President for operations in 2002.

In 2006, Mr. Smith became chief operating officer of Flexi-Mat Corporation, a national designer, manufacturer and importer of pet products in Plainfield, Ill.

Mr. Smith graduated from Golden Gate University in San Francisco with a Master of Business Administration degree for Management. He also graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in General Engineering and International Affairs.
