Sonic Software Ships New SOA Infrastructure for the Enterprise

    Business Editors/High-Tech Editors

    BEDFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 7, 2005--

With Release 6.1, Sonic Products Extended to Support B2B Integration, Seamless Database Connectivity, Enhanced Service Invocation, Faster and More Flexible Deployment

Sonic Software (http://www.sonicsoftware.com), the inventor and leading provider of the enterprise service bus (ESB), today enhanced and expanded its service-oriented architecture (SOA) infrastructure for the enterprise. Sonic has extended its ESB-based SOA infrastructure line with two new products: the Sonic Collaboration Server(TM) for managing partner interactions; and the Sonic Database Service(TM), which simplifies access and reuse of relational data sources. A new deployment tool simplifies the entire SOA lifecycle, making it easier to deploy and continually upgrade services and processes across large-scale deployments. Enhancements to Sonic ESB(R) and the Sonic Workbench(TM) in the 6.1 release increase SOA development productivity with a new uniform service invocation model that allows services of any type, from Web services to databases, to be easily incorporated into the ESB.
Service-oriented architecture presents the opportunity for organizations to achieve broad-scale interoperability of IT systems, while providing the flexibility required to continually adapt these systems to changing business requirements. SOA requires a new type of software infrastructure--a common platform called the ESB that can connect, mediate and control a wide variety of services in a flexible manner across a distributed environment.

Gartner and Forrester Validate the ESB for Enabling Service-Oriented Architecture

According to Gartner, Inc. Vice President and Research Fellow Roy Schulte, "ESBs support both SOA and event-driven applications in a single middleware infrastructure with a common set of directory, security, transformation, validation and other services."
In his August 2004 report, What Is An Enterprise Service Bus?, Forrester Research, Inc. Vice President and Research Director Mike Gilpin states, "An enterprise service bus (ESB) is software infrastructure that enables service-oriented architecture (SOA) by acting as an intermediary layer of middleware through which a set of reusable business services are made widely available. An ESB helps enterprises obtain the value of SOA by increasing connectivity, adding flexibility that speeds change, and providing greater control over use of the important resources it binds."

Sonic Software First to Fill the SOA Gap

"The dirty little secret of SOA products on the market today is that there is no common way of working with various types of services, which can include everything from Web services to relational databases, frequently requiring additional coding and significantly diminishing SOA flexibility," said Gordon Van Huizen, CTO of Sonic Software. "Sonic is the first software vendor to address this gap head-on."
Van Huizen continued, "The enhancements in 6.1 are the result of working with hundreds of customers across the full lifecycle of an SOA, extending beyond initial implementation. This experience gives us a significant technology advantage over the competition. This latest release is the most comprehensive enterprise-grade infrastructure for SOA on the market today, and should be the choice for any organization developing and executing their SOA strategy."
Sonic was also the first to provide a comprehensive integration suite built on an ESB. Gartner, Inc. now predicts "by the end of 2006, all of the major integration suites will have an ESB core."(1)
With over 175 customers of its ESB and layered SOA infrastructure products, Sonic Software remains the clear ESB technology and market leader. Enhancements in the latest release include:

New Partner Integration Capabilities--the new Sonic Collaboration Server is a B2B server which extends the capabilities of the ESB to integrate external business partners using B2B protocols and Web services standards. Sonic Collaboration Server allows an administrator to fully manage the partner interactions, including using partner-specific protocols and security checks. Sonic Collaboration Server dynamically manages partner profiles, making it easy to respond to new partner requirements without disruption of running operations.

New Relational Database Service--with the introduction of the Sonic Database Service, Sonic provides the easiest and fastest way to integrate relational data sources into an SOA, enabling greater reuse of existing data resources across the enterprise. The Database Service leverages the industry-leading drivers from DataDirect Technologies (http://www.datadirect.com) to provide out-of-the-box connectivity with Oracle Database, Microsoft SQL Server, Sybase Adaptive Server, Informix Dynamic Server and IBM DB2 UDB, in addition to any JDBC-enabled data source.

Uniform Service Invocation--the Sonic Workbench and Sonic ESB provide a uniform model for natively invoking services of various types, such as Web services, databases or intermediary services, allowing all types of services to participate as "first-class citizens" in the enterprise SOA. The Sonic Workbench also makes it easier than ever to incorporate all types of services into an SOA without sacrificing security or flexibility.

Support for Staged Deployments--a new deployment tool simplifies the staged transition from development to testing to deployment, and significantly accelerates deployment and upgrade of large-scale SOAs. The new deployment management tool allows architects to establish a single, logical deployment archive for multiple physical topologies.

Sonic also introduced the Sonic SOA Suite(TM), a bundled product offering that delivers deployment flexibility and simplicity for organizations pursuing SOA projects. The suite includes Sonic ESB, Sonic Orchestration Server(TM), Sonic XML Server(TM) and the new Sonic Database Service.
"Mitsubishi Electric Information Technology Corporation welcomes Sonic Software Corporation's announcement of their new SOA infrastructure products," said Mr. Yasuhiro Oogihara, Director, Group Senior Vice President, Corporate Group A of Mitsubishi Electric Information Technology Corporation. "With new and expanded functionality, we see great synergy between Sonic's ESB-based SOA products and the system optimization solutions--Data Centric Solutions DS--that Mitsubishi Electric Information Technology provides."
