Renesas Technology Doubles R8C/Tiny Flash Microcontroller Product Line

Renesas Technology America, Inc. today added 24 more flash microcontrollers to its R8C/Tiny series, doubling the product line. The new network-enabled devices address the growing need for small-package, low-pin-count microcontrollers to handle the expanding functionality and growing sophistication of many embedded system applications. The 20MHz and 16MHz, 16-bit chips can serve both as main processors in home appliances, white goods and small industrial control systems, and as sub-processors in larger systems such as automotive systems and advanced office automation equipment.
The previously introduced R8C/Tiny chips have small 32-pin packages (R8C/10/11/12/13 groups) or 20-pin packages (R8C/14/15/16/17 groups). By contrast, the new models have compact 48-pin packages (R8C/20/21/22/23 groups) or 52-pin packages (R8C/24/25 groups). Also, the devices in the six new groups have timers that operate twice as fast, provide new CAN and LIN interfaces for networking, offer improved on-chip flash memory functions, and include high-reliability, high-temperature-range (-40 to +125 degrees C) versions for automotive use. Thus, the expanded R8C/Tiny lineup gives system engineers a broad range of code-compatible chips with function and package choices that are excellent matches for a broad span range of applications.
Enhanced on-chip functions
The advanced 16-bit timer built into the new microcontrollers is driven by an on-chip oscillator that operates at up to 40MHz. This higher speed improves timer counter resolution, enabling the chips to more precisely control motors and implement induction heating. Other on-chip peripherals include clock oscillators, power-on reset (POR) and low-voltage detect (LVD) functions, 12-channel 10-bit A/D converter, and more. Devices in all the new groups have a LIN interface, while those in the R8C/22 and R8C/23 groups also provide a CAN interface that supports 16 message slots. To boost system performance and simplify the software of LIN-based applications, most of the protocol processing is performed by hardware using an 8-bit timer channel and a UART channel.
"These new R8C/Tiny Series MCUs provide an enhanced connectivity solution to home appliances by using LIN technology, which was traditionally used to connect multiple MCUs mainly in automotive systems," said Ritesh Tyagi, senior marketing manager, system LSI business unit at Renesas Technology America. "The LIN interfaces offer highly efficient networking capability and help minimize the electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electromagnetic susceptibility (EMS) of home appliances such as cook top ranges and refrigerators to ensure high reliability of the system."
In the new R8C/Tiny series devices, the transition from flash memory rewriting to interrupt handling has been shortened to approximately 100us, about 95 percent less than the previous models. This greatly improves the responsiveness of the embedded system and extends the range of applications the microcontrollers can handle. In addition, data can be written to one flash memory block while data in another block is being erased. In many cases, this capability makes it possible to replace external EEPROM (electrically erasable and programmable read-only memory) with the microcontroller's on-chip flash memory (data flash) saving cost and reducing system complexity.
System development tools
Renesas development tools for the new R8C/20 series microcontrollers include the E8 emulator/on-chip debugger. It connects to the microcontroller via a single-pin interface so all I/O pins to be used during debugging, for more efficient program development. The E8 can be used as a flash memory writer, too. Renesas also offers the High-performance Embedded Workshop, an integrated development environment with C/C++ compiler, editor, etc. Additional tools and services are available from the large community of independent vendors that supports the R8C series.
Renesas Technology is going to offer a factory programming option at nominal one-time charges. That saves the in-house programming cost for its customers. Moreover, Renesas will continue to extend the R8C/Tiny series product lineup with models that feature packages, functions, and performance optimized to suit evolving market needs.
