Quantum's Midrange Tape Drives Earn Nod From InfoWorld Magazine
SAN JOSE, Calif., March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Quantum Corp. , a global leader in storage, today announced that its SDLT 600 and CL 800 LTO-3 drives were given high marks by the InfoWorld Test Center in the March 21, 2005 issue. On a scale of 1 to 10, the SDLT 600 and Quantum LTO-3 drives earned an 8.4 and 8.7, respectively, and both products were lauded for their superior performance and reliability. The Quantum LTO-3 was given special recognition for its industry-leading speed, and the SDLT 600 was praised for its capacity and affordable price.
The SDLT 600 tape drive was launched by Quantum in the fall of 2003, and its LTO-3 drive was the first LTO-3 drive to market when Certance launched it in fall 2004 (Certance was acquired by Quantum in January 2005). The complementary strengths of the SDLT 600 and LTO-3 drives are a testament to Quantum's broad product portfolio, enabling customers to choose the tape technology that best fits their needs.
Despite the increase in alternative methods for data storage, tape remains a key component for many organizations. Mario Apicella, InfoWorld Test Center editor, commented, "Indeed, despite the abundance of alternative backup options, tape technologies continue to evolve, leading to devices that are faster, more capacious, and capable of storing data reliably and at moderate cost."
In his review, Apicella commended the speed and "friendly features" of the Quantum LTO-3 tape drive. He also remarked that its built-in features would prolong the useful life of the tape drive. Apicella wrote, "Certance has loaded its LTO-3 tape unit with a handful of features that improve the cartridge life and should grant more reliable backups running at the fastest rate the host sustains."
During the tests, the Quantum LTO-3 unit processed 315 GB from 16 volumes in less than one hour. Apicella concluded that the Quantum LTO-3 drive, "is a complete desktop backup solution that offers excellent performance, good management tools, great support, and a well-respected backup application at a competitive price."
In his review of the SDLT 600, Apicella noted the additional features that make it easier to manage data and comply with recent regulations such as HIPAA and Sarbanes-Oxley. Regarding DLTSage(TM) -- which provides a rich array of management and diagnostic tools that allow for easier tape management -- Apicella noted that it enables, "the collection of a wealth of diagnostic data that simplifies troubleshooting and predicting hardware or media faults." In addition, Apicella commended the ease with which DLTIce(TM) converted tape cartridges into Write Once, Read Many (WORM) tape. Quantum's DLTIce provides users with WORM capability using a standard tape cartridge.
Apicella concluded, "Offering unprecedented speed and capacity, the Quantum SDLT 600 can be a hard-to-refuse proposition for companies with large repositories and little time to waste waiting for tape backups. A very competitive price, home-built WORM cartridges, and backward compatibility with popular Quantum models could fit the bill for many customers."
"Customers tell us they want tape storage solutions that offer high performance, reliability and manageability at an affordable price," said Charlene Murphy, vice president of marketing for Quantum's Storage Devices Business Unit. "We strive to offer customers a range of products that meet these needs. The recognition we've received from InfoWorld's Test Center validates the value both the SDLT 600 and Quantum LTO-3 deliver."
