The heavy vote in favor of the bill by the Senate sends a very hopeful message to the millions of immigrants who live in the big country to the north, where they contribute with their efforts and knowledge to the economy and culture of the United States, the Honduran President affirmed.

Furthermore, President Lobo Sosa stated that he is very optimistic about the discussion of immigration reform in the House of Representatives of the country, considering that "the United States is a land of liberty and opportunity that has been built by immigrants from all over the world."

The President added that the passing of the bill constitutes a signal of solidarity to the people of Latin America, strengthening further the fraternal relations between the United States and Latin America and the Caribbean, the region where most of the beneficiaries of the reform in question come from.

According to official data, more than one million Hondurans live in the United States, most of them in the southern part of the country, particularly in the state of Florida. These Hondurans left their country in search of the "American dream," and have been hoping for immigration reform for decades.

Lobo Sosas reaction is made known after the U.S. Senate passed the historic bill for immigration reform last week with the backing of U.S. President Barack Obama, which could mean legalization for 11 million undocumented individuals.

With 68 votes in favor and 32 against out of 100 senators, the upper chamber gave its approval to a bill that could result in the biggest immigration reform in recent years. The bill will now go to the U.S. House of Representatives.

The immigration reform bill, entitled "The Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act" proposes to increase the number of working visas, delivering papers to 11 million illegal immigrants, most of them Latinos, and allow them to apply for U.S. citizenship after a transition period of at least 13 years.
