PPL Corporation Donates Susquehanna River Islands for Preservation, Public Use

ALLENTOWN, Pa., April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- PPL is donating six islands in the Susquehanna River to the Northcentral Pennsylvania Conservancy, which will make sure that the islands, located near the town of Shamokin Dam, are preserved in their natural state and made available for public use.

"By giving these islands to the conservancy, PPL is pleased to support preservation and recreational uses of the river," said Robert J. Barkanic, director of Environmental Management for PPL Corporation.

"PPL's donation is a wonderful example of the efforts under way all along the Susquehanna to conserve land, improve water quality and provide greater recreational opportunities through the Susquehanna Greenway and Susquehanna River Water Trail," said Renee Carey, executive director of the Northcentral Pennsylvania Conservancy.

The conservancy intends to transfer ownership of the islands, which have a total area of about 225 acres, to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

Canoeists will be able to use the islands to bypass a dam that spans the Susquehanna on either side of the largest island, known as Buyers Island. There also are plans to establish a camping area for canoeists on Buyers Island.

"It is especially appropriate that we are able to announce this donation so close to Earth Day," Barkanic said. "It is a good example of PPL's stewardship of land and water resources."

The islands are owned by PPL Generation. At one time, PPL owned the nearby power plant in Shamokin Dam. When the company sold the power plant in 1999, it retained ownership of the islands.

Another PPL subsidiary, PPL Electric Utilities, owns several power lines that cross the northern section of Buyers Island. As part of the donation agreement, PPL Electric Utilities retains access rights to the power lines for maintenance and repairs, and rights to build future lines across the island if necessary.

PPL Corporation , headquartered in Allentown, Pa., controls about 12,000 megawatts of generating capacity in the United States, sells energy in key U.S. markets and delivers electricity to more than 5 million customers in Pennsylvania, the United Kingdom and Latin America.
