Pöyry awarded basic engineering assignment for the new wastewater solution in Lappeenranta, Finland

PÖYRY PLC                 Press release, 16 May 2016 at 13:00 pm (EEST)

Pöyry awarded basic engineering assignment for the new wastewater solution in Lappeenranta, Finland

Lappeenrannan Lämpövoima Oy has awarded Pöyry the basic engineering assignment for the new Lappeenranta wastewater treatment plant and its wastewater transfer system. The assignment also includes identification and comparison of process solutions, piloting of the selected solution, optimisation of the wastewater balancing and pumping systems and preparation of the building permit documents.

The treatment plant will be able to purify the wastewater load equivalent to a population of 130,000 people. The wastewater will be treated mechanically, chemically and biologically. Particular challenges arise from the wastewater from the local waste management utility and the strictest treatment regulations ever set in Finland. The total phosphorus content of the treated wastewater may not exceed 0.1 mg/l. Therefore, operational reliability of the transfer system and the treatment plant under all conditions, and use of the most modern and effective technology, will be important priorities in the design.

After completion in Summer 2021, the Lappeenranta wastewater treatment plant will be the most modern wastewater facility in Finland and one of the best-performing facilities in Europe. The basic engineering phase started in February 2016. It will be completed at the end of 2017 in conjunction with the building permit applications.

"Our cooperation with Pöyry worked well during the Environmental Impact Assessment and pre-engineering phase. This gives us a good position to continue the engineering process of this extensive and demanding project," says Riitta Moisio, Water and Environment Manager at Lappeenrannan Lämpövoima.

"We are happy to have the opportunity to continue our productive cooperation to deliver the best for this project. We appreciate the clear understanding of Lappeenrannan Lämpövoima in the difficulty of the project, which was reflected in the selection criteria set for the consultant. Pöyry is the right partner for solving demanding water-related problems," says Reijo Kuivamäki, President of the Water Business Unit at Pöyry.

The value of the order will not be disclosed. The order has been recognised in the order stock of Regional Operations in Q1 2016.
