Pennsylvania Department of Aging Presents Excellence in Nutrition and Best Practice Awards at Annual Nutrition Conference

STATE COLLEGE, Pa., May 16, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, the Pennsylvania Department of Aging recognized individuals and organizations as leaders in providing older adults with nutritious meals at home and in senior community centers throughout the commonwealth.

"The Wolf Administration is committed to supporting good health for all Pennsylvanians, including our seniors who need to able to access vital nutrients to live and age well in their homes and communities," said Secretary of Aging Teresa Osborne. "The individuals and organizations receiving awards today understand that senior hunger and malnutrition threaten the ability of so many older Pennsylvanians to successfully age in place; and we are grateful for their willingness to provide programs that help seniors access nutritious foods and develop healthy eating habits."  

The Secretary's Award for Excellence in Nutrition for Older Pennsylvanians and the Best Practice Awards were announced at the 2017 Pennsylvania Department of Aging Nutrition Conference. The event brought together national and regional speakers offering a wealth of information about healthy eating, nutritional challenges related to aging, food safety, and targeted marketing.

"Those receiving awards work tirelessly to enhance nutrition programs within Pennsylvania's aging services network," Sec. Osborne said.

These programs include Department of Aging-funded nutrition services such as congregate meals served in senior community centers or satellite centers, and home-delivered meals served to homebound individuals. 

The awards presentation included:

  • Secretary's Individual Award for Excellence in Nutrition for Older Pennsylvanians, presented to Andrew Dapkin, a volunteer for the Pike County Area Agency on Aging.
  • Best Practice in Nutrition for Older Pennsylvanians Award, presented to Montco Senior Adult Activities Center for their congregate meal program.
  • Best Practice in Nutrition for Older Pennsylvanians Award, presented to Active Aging Inc. for their home-delivered meal program.
