Monster Survey Suggests Manufacturing Workers May be Unhappy, Seeking More Fulfilling Jobs

Monster.com, the worldwide leader in successfully connecting people to job opportunities and flagship brand of Monster Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE: MWW), today released new survey results revealing that U.S. manufacturing industry workers are largely unhappy and likely to be on the job hunt.

Other key insights on Manufacturing Workers include:

  • Close to one-half (47%) of manufacturing workers surveyed expressed dissatisfaction with their current job
  • Only 34% expressed confidence in actually securing a new position
  • Nearly three-quarters (74%) agree that it’s more challenging to find a job than it was a year ago.

Additionally, those surveyed feel the job market is saturated with qualified talent in their area of expertise, making finding a new job even more challenging. On a more positive note, near one-half (49 percent) of manufacturing workers agree that there are more job openings now than a year ago.

A Monster analysis of the industries that are hiring manufacturing workers, revealed a few surprises, too. For example, the top industry hiring manufacturing workers is unexpectedly pharmaceutical companies as well as radio and television broadcasting companies. Typical industries that come to mind when thinking of manufacturing workers such as the aircraft and medical industries are further down on the list.

"With conditions in the US economy turning more favorable for manufacturing in general, there are several indicators that manufacturing jobs are returning to the US as evidenced by recent public announcements," said Jeffrey Quinn, Vice President of Monster’s Global Insights. "From the other side, manufacturing jobs on Monster are viewed close to 3 million times every month, indicating substantial interest from industry workers. Maybe finding the right job is just a matter of bringing their talents to another industry in need.”
