Mindspeed Extends PMD Offering That Streamlines Design and Testing of PON Equipment
Mindspeed Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:MSPD), a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions for network infrastructure applications, today announced the latest addition to its family of physical media devices (PMDs) that reduce component count, while streamlining the development and testing of ONTs that are used to deliver FTTx multi-play services via fiber-access networks using Gigabit Ethernet passive optical network (GEPON) and Gigabit PON (GPON) technology.
Mindspeed®’s M02098 programmable burst-mode laser driver includes an integrated limiting amplifier, analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and digital-to-analog converter (DAC), and joins the company’s growing family of PMDs for a comprehensive range of xPON FTTx applications. Mindspeed will be showcasing the M02098 driver along with its optical PMD family at OFC/NFOEC 2010, today through March 25, in the company’s private suite #2648 at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, Calif.
Like its highly popular predecessor, the M02090 device, the M02098 driver incorporates the company’s proven dual closed-loop Eye-Minder™ technology for real time monitoring and compensation for laser aging and temperature effects to reduce production testing requirements and lower overall ONT system costs. The M02098 driver can be implemented in a small form factor (SFF) or small form factor pluggable (SFP) optical transceiver or with a bi-directional optical sub-assembly (BOSA) that can be mounted directly onto the ONT board to significantly reduce overall bill-of-material (BOM) costs.
TECOM Co., LTD has integrated Mindspeed’s M02098, using an economical on-board BOSA implementation for its GPON ONT products. "Mindspeed’s M02098 has significantly increased design flexibility, while cutting costs by enabling us to use an on-board BOSA,” said David Chou, director, optical communications department at TECOM. "We are pleased to use Mindspeed’s solution in our GPON ONT design that significantly reduces ONT system test time by implementing the M02098’s Eye-Minder technology.”
Mindspeed’s M02098 driver has also been implemented in a transceiver design from Coretek Opto Corporation. "The M02098 from Mindspeed offers the robust performance characteristics which are ideal for our EPON and GPON FTTx applications,” said Yunshi Lin, director of optical communications department at Coretek Opto Corporation. "Mindspeed's technology allows us to produce highly competitive transceiver products for the demanding optical networking market.”
Mindspeed’s M02098 laser driver delivers up to 2.67 Gbps data rates for GPON, GEPON, and other xPON applications. Capable of driving 100mA of modulation current and 80mA of bias current, the M02098 driver can independently control bias and modulation currents via its dual closed loop, and also supports operation in closed- and open-loop configurations. The M02098’s limiting amplifier features a programmable signal level detector with a typical 2dB of optical hysteresis, and an internally programmed JAM function to squelch output chatter when no signal is present. The inputs have selectable bandwidth and selectable output swing, and their sensitivity is better than 6mV at 1.25Gbps and 10mV at 2.5Gbps. Pairing the M02098 device with Mindspeed’s M02026 or M02015 transimpedance amplifier (TIA), delivers additional design margin improvement.
The M02098 laser driver is available now in production quantities.
