Migrant Crisis Pits Wayfair Workers Against Management
(RTTNews) - Wayfair employees at their Boston headquarters are planning a walkout on Wednesday afternoon in protest against the company's decision to sell furniture to migrant detention camps for children.
In a petition, signed by 547 Wayfair employees requested not to do business with BCFS that operates migrant facilities for the Health and Human services department. BCFS has placed order with Wayfair for bedroom furniture worth $200 thousand last week.
The employees in a letter asked to establish a code of ethics that "empowers Wayfair and its employees to act in accordance with our core values." In response, the company said their business is to sell to any customer that abides by the laws of the country. Wayfair further said its stance does not indicate support of the opinion or actions of the purchaser.
There have been many mixed responses on social media for and against the company. Alexandria Ocasio, Congress woman for NY-14 tweeted @wayfairwalkout, "Wayfair workers couldn't stomach they were making beds to cage children..."
Shares of the e-commerce company were declining at the market opening.
