Mayor Lovely Warren Hosts the UNCF Rochester Mayor's Luncheon

ROCHESTER. N.Y., Oct. 3, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Mayor Lovely Warren Hosts the UNCF Rochester Mayor's Luncheon, Raising Funds for Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Students

Dr. Henry Tisdale, president of Claflin University, serves as keynote speaker

Mayor Lovely A. Warren will welcome more than 250 business, civic and education leaders, including keynote speaker Dr. Henry Tisdale, president of UNCF (United Negro College Fund)-member institution Claflin University, to the fifth annual Rochester Mayor's Luncheon. Held at the Joseph A. Floreano Riverside Convention Center on Wednesday, Oct. 24, beginning at 11:30 a.m., the annual fundraising event supports UNCF's efforts to provide the necessary resources to minority students seeking a quality education and the historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) that support them. Melanie Johnson, graduate of HBCU Howard University and reporter at Spectrum News, will serve as mistress of ceremonies.

"As a staunch advocate for the higher education of our city's youth, it is truly my honor to host this luncheon," said Mayor Warren. "Part of my administration's mission is to provide better educational opportunities for all of our residents. This event brings us closer to that goal by making additional scholarship funds available and providing HBCUs with much-needed financial support. I want to thank UNCF for their investment in our youth and our historically black institutions of higher learning. Your efforts preserve our legacy while advancing our future."

UNCF is the country's largest private provider of scholarships to minority students, helping more than 450,000 students graduate from college. Last year, UNCF awarded nearly $5 million to students from New York.

"As we celebrate our fifth year of hosting the Rochester Mayor's Luncheon, it is vitally important that we recognize leaders such as Mayor Warren, whose support has been unwavering," said Diego Aviles, UNCF vice president, development, northeast region. "Events such as the Rochester Mayor's Luncheon help to keep academic programming competitive and tuition affordable, while producing the area's next generation of leaders."

Presenting sponsors are the City of Rochester, Rochester City School District, Delta Air Lines and JPMorgan Chase & Co.
