Lyndon Baines Johnson's Centennial Celebration to Begin January 1, 2008, Series of Programs and Events in Texas and Washington, D. C.
AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, organizers of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Centennial, commemorating the 100th birthday (August 27, 1908) of the 36th President, announced that the official Centennial celebrations will begin January 1, 2008, with a year-long tribute to the LBJ legacy. To kick off the Centennial celebrations, seven LBJ-affiliated groups and GSD&M's Idea City unveiled a Centennial logo and website. A series of programs and events in Texas and Washington, D. C., will highlight the Centennial salute. Participating organizations are:
-- Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park -- Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site -- Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center -- Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum -- Lyndon Baines Johnson Foundation -- Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs -- Texas State University - San Marcos
Both the Centennial logo and website are specifically designed to commemorate the full scope of the LBJ legacy. Created by Austin-based GSD&M's Idea City, the logo showcases the numeral one-hundred with LBJ's signature Resistol hat representing the second zero. The logo's text reads "Lyndon B. Johnson Centennial Celebration -- Celebrating His Can-Do Spirit." To be called a "can-do" person was one of the highest compliments one could receive from President and Mrs. Johnson. This slogan represents the leadership, commitment, and optimism of the 36th President of the United States and Lady Bird Johnson.
The website, http://www.lbj100.org/, also created by Idea City, showcases the logo, calendar events, and information leading up to the Centennial, to be celebrated in Washington, D.C., and across Texas beginning in January 2008.
"President Johnson was a man of the people and for the people," said Roy Spence, co-founder, CEO and chairman of GSD&M's Idea City. "He made a great difference for the people of Texas, our country and the world, and we are honored to do our part in celebrating his great legacy."
The logo will be used by all seven organizations throughout 2008, and a comprehensive website with a detailed calendar, historical information, and photographs will launch on January 1, 2008.
"Daddy was a force of nature. He had a relentless 'can do' spirit dedicated to working for social justice, and it was infectious! GSD&M's Idea City's extraordinary creativity has captured that spirit in a logo worthy of the man and his hundredth birthday. Generations of Johnsons are proud of and deeply grateful to GSD&M and the Lyndon Baines Johnson Centennial Committee for their phenomenal contributions to this celebration. I believe that the birthday present Daddy would have wanted most is for us to thoughtfully address what still needs to be done for a more just America and get about doing it," said Luci Baines Johnson, daughter of former President and Mrs. Johnson.
