LX4 Trade Group Announces Addition of Five New Members

    Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

EATONTOWN, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 24, 2005--The LX4 Trade Group (LX4-TG), an organization founded in October 2004 by EMCORE Corp. (NASDAQ: EMKR), MergeOptics GmbH., Opnext, Inc., Quake Technologies Inc. and Wavesplitter Technologies Inc., today announced the addition of five new companies. These new members include BeamExpress Inc., Mitsubishi Electric Inc., Mysticom Semiconductor, O-Net Communications Ltd. and 4Wave Inc. Each of these new members participates in the LX4 industry segment by providing 10GBASE-LX4 modules or key subcomponents. Their addition to the organization signals continued strength and broad multi-vendor support for this expanding 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) segment.
The LX4-TG's mission is to promote interoperability and market awareness for the LX4 standard, which offers the ability to transmit 10 Gigabit Ethernet data over installed multimode fiber and single-mode fiber infrastructure.
LX4 products in the XENPAK and X2 form factors are readily available from multiple vendors. Each of the 10GBase-LX4 modules from the members of the LX4-TG is compliant to the highly versatile multi-wavelength transmission format specified within the IEEE 802.3ae standard for 10GbE, which was ratified in June 2002. These modules provide 10GbE connectivity over 300m of installed multimode optical fiber, or 10km or single-mode optical fiber.
"Beam Express just emerged from the stealth mode of working feverishly on the LX4 technology and the company is currently providing sample modules to our customers. We are privileged to join an elite group of coworkers, the LX4 Trade Group, to help demonstrate vendor commitment, robustness, and interoperability of LX4," said Bor-long Twu, chief operating officer.
"Today's announcement is an indication of the growing strength and importance of the LX4 Trade Group," stated Daniel Chen, Mitsubishi Electric's vice president and general manager of the Semiconductor Division. "The issues of interoperability and standardization of 10GbE technologies in this space are key to market growth in the near and longer term. We feel that by being part of this collective, offering LX4 products, Mitsubishi Electric and the other members of the group are well positioned to capitalize on these growth opportunities in 2005 and beyond."
"Mysticom Semiconductor is pleased to participate in the LX4 TG," said Neil Vasant, Mysticom's CEO. "We will be joining our colleagues in evangelizing LX4 as the premiere solution for 10GbE connectivity over 300m of multimode optical fiber. We believe 2005 will be a breakout year for the deployment of 10GbE interconnects, both in LX4 and CX4."
"O-Net is a company rich with experience in the design and manufacture of passive optical components. We have the technology and manufacturing capabilities to supply the critical components in LX4 optics in large volumes while remaining cost competitive," stated Mr. Austin Na, CEO. "Our mission is to ensure that LX4 technology continues to be a competitive option for the 10GbE market segment."
"4Wave recognizes the need to promote interoperability and market awareness for the LX4 standard and is honored to participate in the LX4-TG," said Sami Antrazi, 4Wave's president. "We believe our patented multi-filter CWDM chip, currently available in sample quantities, provides the necessary miniaturization of the mux/demux optical component to support a robust, cost-effective LX4 product in the X2 and XFP form factors."

    About 10GBase-LX4

The 10GbE (IEEE 802.3ae) standard offers several ways to transmit data over different physical media. The term 10GBase-LX4 references a multi-wavelength approach to fiber optic transmission. The "10" stands for 10 Gigabits per second; "Base" means baseband communications; and "LX4" designates four optical wavelengths combined within the module and transmitted over fiber optic cable. Other 10GbE baseband interconnects include 10GBase-CX4, 10GBase-SR, 10GBase-LR and 10GBase-ER. These interconnects are usually offered in integrated modules that insert into XENPAK, X2 or other pluggable port slots, mounted on switches, routers, servers or storage systems.
